tom jones or prince(kiss)

now i know its pretty stupid question to ask on a prince site!, but if u are a real fan u can say where prince has gone wrong or didn't sound tht good, or tht song was crap, or those lyrics are just stupid!! but the question is, which singer prince( the orginal virson) or tom jones(second virson) sang "KISS" best? and which one was more famous?

now i would say!! tht tom jones voice is great in kiss, it sound great with a deeper voice, but i think prince's orginal virson is 10 times better, but tom jones i think made it more famous!!

I saw Prince in concert at Madison Square Garden when "Kiss" came out. But, he didn't perform it! I kept thinking "He'll do it for the encore." I stayed around. People started to leave. They were taking the set apart... No "Kiss". WTF???

prince got it to number one in the USA, i think it was like #4 in the UK. tom jones'/art of noises version i think was top ten. i think it might get more airplay now, at least in uk, cos prince hasnt had a hit in so long, whereas tom jones recently had hit songs and albums.

I think Mazarati should be credited for making the song what it is. My understanding is Prince discarded the song to them (I have the acoustic original and its no hot shit). They arranged it , made it the song Prince released. Prince stoled it back and released it with his vocal and even kept the Mazarati background vocal and arrangement intact. Took 2 entities (Tom Jones and the Art of Noise) to get half the quality of the Mazarati/Prince version.

My understanding is that Mazarati (well from what BrownMark says at least) dismissed the song; thinking it just didnt sound right, when Prince wanted 2 help out with their album, offering them 'Kiss'. I assume Mazarati only heard the demo I assume on the acoustic guitar. I think Prince liked the song, went back in2 the studio and totally arranged it giving birth 2 the version that's on Parade. Hence, the reason why I would be inclined 2 say that it was actually Prince who clearly should be credited for making the song what it is although Ur quite right 2 some extent.

I was there too!!! I had to be forced out by security cuz I was standing there in denial as they broke down the stage... I was like "It can't be over... no encore??? no KISS???" I was literally staninding MSG with my friend who thought I was insane!

Re: KISS... in the book "Posessed" and on the Org it's pretty well documented how Prince first gave Mazerati the acoustic version... David Z. who produced Mazerati changed the instrumentation... namely creating the drum beat on the Linn and doing the funky thing with the guitar sound which follows the high hat pattern (basically the only instrument you hear in most of the verses).

When Prince heard that, he said it was too good for them and wanted it back. prince added the funky James Brown guitar part (what you hear at the intro and outro and underneath the last verse)... an did the vocals in his falsetto... and behold... we get the classic we know today.

Apparently, Brownmark and David Z. were pretty pissed about this. Prince credited David Z. as arranger or co-arranger.

But the really significant thing is... the extended version of Kiss!!! That is amazing! It's like you haven't even heard the song until you hear part 2, which gets all synth horns plus Eric playing various sax'es including what sounds like a Baritone Sax... and the funny ad-libbing by P and Wendy!

No doubt. Prince. But I like the horn part on Tom Jones' version, and of course Tom is a very good singer.

I know you are only sixteen. Therefore, you were not around when the song came out but Kiss was a huge hit for both artist. I think Prince's version is better because I do not care for Tom's voice.

Great! So I didn't imagine this! biggrin I think I read somewhere that the reason he cut the show short was that he pulled a muscle, or something.

It's true. If you get the 'Testament' set, then there's the original Prince version & the much superior Mazerati one. Of course, P's version is better than Mazerati's because of P's voice.

P's is sexier because of the falsetto. And the way the arrangement is so stripped back. The TJ version is too "busy", IMO.

there was a third version

ten? years ago, I was watching the australian music video show, RAGE, and they showed, in order:
tom jones's KISS
then: a sydney band's version, that started with the line:
'you don't have to be PRINCE if you want to DANCE!'
then, third, we got the original

I wouldn't mind hearing that other version again; no idea who the band was, though
