RUMOR about the tour and new Best Of album

Love2thenines at Housequake reports from a PP at NPGMC that the tour is to support a new Best Of (of the original tracks, not re-recordings), with Musicology as a new bonus track.

Take it with a grain of salt. Take it for what it's worth. I just hope it's not true.

This would be (1) quite frustrating for most of his fans (his FAMS would love it I guess!) but (2) maybe a good way to create a buzz or at least to remind people that Prince still exists...provided of course that they come up with a nice end-product and that the release it backed by a clever and efficient marketing strategy...

Fam (this word is another example of Prince's weird lingo, and stands for "family members" I guess) are let's say the official fans dedicated to Prince and his views as posted on npgmc.com, his official website. Prince fans are just old-timers who, in spite of a reccuring sense of disillusion and disappointment re: Prince's current production, still log on to Prince.org on a fairly regular basis wink

Dunno if this is true or not (I hope not re: best of, I hope so re: tour, but I guess that was on the cards any way).

Prince doesn't like talking about the past it seems with concerns to recent interviews, but he'll play all his old music live in concert.

His hits and old songs are like a bad habit he can't quite break. Every now and then he purges himself of them in a greatest hits, then he'll be inspired and play great new music in concerts (The Gold era shows were soon after The Hits, ONA Live was soon after The Very Best Of). But sooner or later, the habit creeps back in and he's back playing uninspired versions of U Got The Look...

At risk of being pedantic (maybe at risk of thinking like Prince!), he hasn't personally released any greatest hits packages. Only that big nasty record company has!

still, he's just as bad as that 'big nasty record company' if he's gonna put out another hits package.

You're right. I reckon booyah hit the nail on the head - his hits are a bad habit he can't kick. I was still impressed with how great his recent performances have been, even though he played his older material.

I know everyone complaines about everyone complaining on this site...so I'm going to try and not complain...but I have to admit...why would we want another "best of" CD? There is already the 2-CD hits collection...and a "best of" which was released ~2 years ago. I too would MUCH prefer a new CD, not more of the old.

And don't spend too much time complaining about him not touring the US...clearly he is able to sell more tickets in Europe than here...sounds like Hawaii was very empty?

Bummer...I was really hoping for a whole new CD (with Musicology) released and promoted by Universal. Oh well!

He's still got a way to go to catch up with the big boys though :
There's (I think) 7 different David Bowie best ofs.
Chris DeBurgh has 5.

as for The Eagles, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Elvis...

and of course : http://www.valdoonican.or...rybest.htm (specially for the people who like to buy best of's).
Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

This is false... I checked all over the NPGMC message boards... Prince will tour in 2004... becuase he usually does go on tour (i.e. Hit N Run, ONA, etc) so that's just playing the odds to say he'll be out.

As for the Best of... he started the rumor in year 2 of the NPGMC... with Madrid 2 Chicago and something else too. No way he tours to support this...

For a guy who claims to have grown as a musician and as a person since his younger, raunchier days, I would have to say that to tour supporting a Best of package would be a step backwards... not likely in my opinion

How many copies of Let's Go Crazy do these people think we need, anyway? Unless he's tossing in fan favorites and concert/aftershow favorites, who can really be bothered with this?

In his Gold Experience special on VH1 a few years back, Prince criticized the word "fan", arguing that it was short for "fanatic". So as an alternative, his loyal listeners started using the term "fam" as a shortened form of "family", which seemed more pleasant.

There used to be an independent publication called "The Prince Family Newsletter" that was published in the mid 90s, and the whole "family" idea may have been derived from that.

Nowdays a "fam" generally means a really obsessed fan, to the point of disillusionment. And fans went back to referring to themselves as "fans", because Prince's little word play got to be too silly to take seriously...

Well, let's see. For all his faults Prince does move forward with his music, not back. I think it would be very out of character of him to undertake a wotld tour on the back of a Greatest Hits album. He'd have to have a new album to promote as well.

I'm not discounting the possibility of an officially sanctioned remastered Greatest Hits coming out next year. what with BMG/Universal buying WB Music and Prince's publishing deal with the former.

Bring it on.

Its a bit soon after best of so I think sales would not be that great. Was there gonna be a best of symbol at one time maybe its finally gonna happen but I for one wont be buying it unless it has alot more than 1 or 2 new songs on it.

Oh well might not be true I just hope 2004 has more 2 offer than this

Two new songs this year, an album which was basically a tarted-up instrumental jam session, and a hastily put-together live DVD...and next year, we're allegedly looking forward to a greatest hits rehash with ONE new song and an accompanying "best of" tour?

Look. We know what's out there that can be released. We know Prince's potential as a prolific artist. Even if he's going through a dry spell, he has scores of great unreleased songs he can shine up and release. He could probably even put out a retrospective collection of live performances and rake in the $$$. What about the Chocolate Invasion? Hell, what about just releasing ONE of those discs? Put Xpectation out in the wrecka stows already!

I can't help but think that Mr. Purplepants is holding out on releasing anything new of any substance, so he can show a prospective label all the whining and carrying on and speculative droolings and say "see? people are foaming at the mouth for my stuff", and when he's able to get a deal that allows him the money and resources to start requesting camels be delivered to Paisley Park at 4am again, then maybe we'll see a familiar trickle of the good stuff again.

Meanwhile, either we're moving forward or we're basting in the juices of nostalgia. Don't pooh-pooh fans for not getting into an album like NEWS and then chastise them for wanting more signature funky pop music.

Such nastiness...

If anything..Warner Brothers will probably do somehting surrounding the Hall of Fame. They may re-plug the 'Very Best oF' Thats out now or repackage it with the 'Video Collection DVD' or some other value add to tempt customers to buy the SAME thing.

Virgin just re-released last year's 'Best of Bowie' set...shrink wrapped it in blue wrap, called it a 'Limited Edition', slapped a CD/DVD remix disc (horrible remixes and video's by the way)...all this because he is going on a 'Hit's' tour.

I can almost garauntee that WB will be in on the Hall Of Fame capitalization game!
Every minute of last night is on my face today....
