I've recently been digging into a lot of live Bowie boots, and I gotta say Prince's live recordings kick his butt...so much more spontaneous and full of surprises. I really enjoy listening to the live stuff.

I go back and forth between listening to just his live stuff. Then I get a little burnt on it, and go to the studio stuff. Same with my Hendrix fetish. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Personally it depends on the track and ones personal taste. For example the track Kiss is a song that works well in its studio form but sucks when preformed live. On the flip side 1+1+1=3 is one of the songs that P can tear up live; however the studio version makes me want to listen to a shotgun blast at very close range. Then you have the songs which work well either in the studio or live (Days of Wild, Head, The other Side of the Pillow). Finally there are the tracks which SUCK regaurdless of how they are preformed: Vicky Waiting, Solo, Jug Head, and the entire TRC album (minus 1+1+1+3 live of course). Like I said it boils down to personal preference. My DC Direct wishlist: 1) Bane, 2) Prof Zoom, 3) Superman Blue, 4) Kilowag, 5) Parasite

Some of his STUDIO tracks R superior 2 his live stuff. Example would B "TRC" album. The sound is superior. No background noise, great bass, horns, keyes etc. Very clear. Another album would B "SYMBOL", as well as the "EMANCIPATION" trio. However, his "live" jive is great too. May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love.

I rarely listen to Prince's studio stuff.
I ONLY listen to live these days, I don't think I have listened to a studio album in over a year. Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

What funkbible said. Plus, the problem with live CDs is they usually have terrible sound quality -- ain't nothing that can reproduce actually being there.

that just sounds like you are uninformed. If you are getting terrible quality bootlegs - you have nobpdy to blame but yourself. Would you go out and buy a car without knowing ANYTHING about it ? except what the dealer is gonna tell you ? because everything he says is gonna be a load of crap. and you are gonna believe that 100% and not get a second opinion from anyone ? Strange, simply strange I don't know where you people come from but you scare me. Who goes out and busy something without knowing what they are even getting ? I better stop now or I will go on for hours.. Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

Don't hate me 'cause I'm NOT beautiful

I used to collect live bootlegs, and trade video tapes and stuff - I have hundreds of them, but I never listened to them more than once.
I am much more interested in out-takes and such than I am live bootlegs and recordings. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm a sucker for a major chord

Studio...Can't seem to explain exactly "Why?" at the moment, but, hmmm, yes, studio. The intimacy perhaps...?...I love hearing Prince's live recordings while watching him on DVD, but as it goes just listening, song for song---I prefer his studio recordings...

BOTH ! | |

I generally prefer the studio recordings only because of the wizardry involved. More craftsmanship. But having said that, I actually prefer the live promo version of "Somebody's Somebody" over the studio one on Emancipation.

Live really, U can just sit back, close Ur enjoys and imagine Urself there. I think it also depends on the specific track for example...I prefer live versions of If I was Ur Girlfriend 2 the studio version, yet I prefer the studio version of Kiss 2 any live version Ive heard.

live or in the studio is like listening to two different guys, especially within the past few years. the raw, rough prince is present on stage. a safer, less ego driven prince is in the studio. and the sounds that come from both are vastly different. i prefer live prince, these days, because he seems almost more comfortable. and there's none of the over-production safety that's in his recent releases.

I can't count the number of people who have said "I used to buy boots but they were terrible" Well am I gonna stop eating food for the rest of my life because I had one bad dinner ? its just fucking nonsensical. there is good food and bad food good boots and bad boots do some research is all i am saying. Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

Jasziah said: I don't buy boots. And you don't know me. Peace. well then how can you make that judgement then ? and you don't think that is just a teeny little contradictory statement there ? How can you say they are terrible and then say you never bought one ? I can tell you the food at a certain reataurant is shit even though I have never been there in my life - it is really bad food there I swear ! Where is the logic in that ? . I prefer studio, but I like both...
Studio to me defines an artist's conceptual prowess (which I think is most important in an artist). Live defines their spontaneity and theatrical/playing ability. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Both. In general studio songs are better, more elaborated. But it depends on the song. The Everlasting now, 1+1+1 is 3, Strollin, and more (taking the last tour) are better live.
And, on the whole, the guitar solos are better if you listen to Prince live.

I love live music (Hendrix, Stones, Zeppelin, AC/DC etc.) but I don't actually know any Prince live stuff. What is the best and most easily available video or audio stuff to get? (I hope you say 1 nite alone cos a kind soul is sending it to me)
