there was a third version

ten? years ago, I was watching the australian music video show, RAGE, and they showed, in order:
tom jones's KISS
then: a sydney band's version, that started with the line:
'you don't have to be PRINCE if you want to DANCE!'
then, third, we got the original

I wouldn't mind hearing that other version again; no idea who the band was, though

If my memory serves me right I think the third veriosn you talk of was by Art of Noise?
In the distance a light shines and I know it is mine. Someday I will touch it because it calls me. It says cross the line, cross the line. I know everything is not always what it seems, so I pinch myself daily just in case it's a dream

Tom Jones' version of Kiss makes almost violent brick

On all the TV show bloopers it shows him splittimg his pants singing it - sums it up perfectly I think - very symbolic!

As I've said before Tom Jones should stick to singing "Delilah".

I almost went apeshit a few weeks ago watching TOTP 2. That eejit Steve Wright??? said that Tom Jones' version of "Kiss" was better than the Prince original!!!

I mean, WTF!!! He needs his ears cleaned out with a pneumatic drill. mad
I'll leave graffiti where you've never been kissed

Hence, the reason why I would be inclined 2 say that it was actually Prince who clearly should be credited for making the song what it is although Ur quite right 2 some extent.

If there is anybody who is responsible to make "Kiss" sound like what it is on record, it would be David Z.

lick Hot damn!! Tom who???

From where I stand, Prince wins, hands down. His sexy ass version of "Kiss" is the original for a reason. Tom should've left the shit alone in my opinion. I'm about to play it right now dammit...music

no, it was definitely some unknown australian band
I'd split my vote between all three

y did prince, give tom jones"kiss" didn't he make enough money when he brought it out, so he gave tom ago, and tom got to number 1??

prince got it to number one in the USA, i think it was like #4 in the UK. tom jones'/art of noises version i think was top ten. i think it might get more airplay now, at least in uk, cos prince hasnt had a hit in so long, whereas tom jones recently had hit songs and albums.

Ok
1. Tom Jones did a cover, so Prince didn't have to "give" him anything. As long as they paid Prince his royalties he really had little say in whether Tom recorded it or not.

2. Here in the states, the Tom Jones/art of noise version was a hit, but not nearly as big as Prince's original. Also, I personally never hear the Tom Jones song anymore, but Prince's Kiss still gets airplay here.
