I'm listening to the Fighting Temptations soundtrack featuring Beyonce. The mood of the album reallty reminds me of 1-800-New-Funk in some ways. I'm not trying to compare Prince/Paisley Park with Beyonce/Destiny's Child etc, so please don't interpret this like that.

I even have similar feelings about the albums. I had expected them both to be throwaways but they are much better than I was hoping. I much prefered 1-800-New-Funk to Prince's other output, at the time just, as I prefer Fighting Temptations to Dangerously in Love.

So, what's the story of 1-800-New-Funk ? How did it come together ? Thinking about it now, it does sound a bit like a soundtrack album.

I think the compilation had something to do with ALL the projects that Warners wouldn't let Prince release because they owned his name -- leading to "Tora Tora" and the symbol name change. I'm sure someone will correct me, or at least give more info...

edit: also the reason behind being able to bypass Warners and call the 1-800-NEW-FUNK number to purchase these other "forthcoming" releases
