Is Prince planning a major commercial come back for 2004?

1. Do you all think Prince intends to benefit from the 20th anniversary of the PR release to come back with a commercial LP next year (hints: the "Best Of" Tour, the "Musicology" video, the new song "What Do U Want...", etc.)

2. Do you think he might succeed? (See the Rave fiasco - not for him: he got a really good deal from Arista, but in terms of sales...)

Thanks to U all wink

It seems almost surreal to think of Prince being commercially hip again...

prince can never be the commercial success he once was - lost the mainstream, pissed off too many of his fans...but he can hope to attain a santana style position - ie that he is respected for being a genius musician and can continue to shift his back catalogue for years to come...

problem is, if he sells out arenas punting P Rain again this year, what happens next when he visits and plays instrumental sets!!??

I agree. I'm not sure that i really want him to be chart topping again. I like that people dismiss Prince's current stuff... its kind of like we're in on an amazing secret!

I've heard from a friend at universal in London that he spent quite a while in LA after the Australia dates negotiating a huge world tour...

I have the same "problem". I love to be a Prince fan, it's like to join a secret organization, but on the other hand, I'd like to see Prince on top again.

I for one don't want him to become commercially successful...I mean, what the hell is that supposed to mean? If he goes all commercial, he would have done so with music that only we would have known about originally. The day he becomes commercial (if he does) is the day that real fans become un-privileged.

Ofcourse, it wont be so bad if his music actually defies the meaning of 'commercial', yet regains him the popularity that he once had in the ole days!

I don't buy this, There are far older artists than Prince having a great deal of success even into their 50's.You don't see people like Springsteen or Elton John complaining.I see no reason why Prince can't get himself a good deal. All he has to do is make sure he reads the damn thing before signing!

The last 10 years of relative obscurity could easily have been avoided. One solution would be to retain the NPGMC for the hardcore fans and his more 'Experimental' stuff like NEWS and to have a record deal with a major to release anything considered a bit more 'commercial'.

Yes I told yall a few weeks ago--it will all culminate with the rock n roll hall of fame..he cant be by himself up there--his band mates will tag along because they helped in his success..Revolution, Andre, The Time...the reunion is a perfect place to set this off in Dec...now with that said it would be so Prince-like to not show up for the reunion etc..but this is the time for all of the purple royal court to get it together and reign for one fell swoop in 2004 PR reunion etc...

Is your friend suggesting he was in negotiation with Universal?

I'm unclear what part Universal would play in a world tour - other than some marketing - unless he was negotiating a world tour to support playing material that Universal wished to back i.e. that they would release.

Prince will be massive in 2004, but it will be through cover versions.

There's a tribute album in the works for Q3 of 2004 to include quite a few big names. While other 'classics' have been lined up with sync deals for adverts.

To answer your question...
I DON'tT think Prince is planning a major commercial come-back for 2004.
I DO think that a lot will happen in the following years and that the new material he will release will be promoted and distributed by Universal like the Aladdin DVD and even better.

SO, either way, he will be in the spotlights again, but not in the sense of Britney, Madonna or other shite, but more like Bowie, Beatles, Buckley kinda way...

Why does ppl always refer to PRINCE as pissing off many folks...PRINCE didn't piss nobody off!

He didnt want to be the corporate bitch and I think its only fair that he owns his music, that he writes, produces and sings all by himself.
HE SHOULD OWN HIS OWN DAMN ART!

Prince has a great chance of selling 10million albums again, he needs someone whose gonna allow him to create the music he wants and give him the promotional campaign he deserves to sell it to the masses!

Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi and any other band or artist who has as much impact in the 80's, 90's and still seem to be on the tip of everyones tounges once in awhile...still has that weight to throw around and get what he/she wants!!!

Prince may not be Mr. Purple Rain again, but he wasn't in 1987 either and he ain't in 2004!

PRINCE will reign again with proper promotion from a corporation who will take what he has to say to heart and be behind him as an artist!

We act like we know it all!
Prince will be back out there eventually, he's PRINCE!
He will not soon be forgotten completely, I have a good feeling he will take this opportunity to let ppl know he is still around and can hang with the best of these bands and new pop acts...that the corporate ppl are creating to make a dime!

PRINCE I love anything you do!
so it don't matter if you #1 on Billboard or # 187 on the charts!!!

U ARE STILL THE BEST!!

oh, of course the other major thing is that the music he produces today is not a touch on his Eighties heyday...if he kept churning out top notch stuff he would still be hitting the top ten today...

if he gets big (ish) again in 2004 it will be on the strength of his back catalogue...ie when he was banging out top tunes not the disappointing stuff of the last ten years...

REALITY IS HE HAD TWO OF THE BIGGEST DEALS EVER ALL TYPES OF PROMOTION AND IT DIDN'T WORK. ON RAVE THE SOUND WAS DATED. IT'S LIKE SAYING YOU EXPECT A COMMERCIAL COMEBACK FROM LITTLE RICHARD.

i would love to see prince on top, cause i've never seen him top of charts and on magazines covers,(cause im only 16) but im afraid, tht he is going to try real hard to make a huge come back, but it doesn't happen, now days people dont listen to funk, or blues, and kids my age buy the records these days, and i cant see many of them buying a prince single. so im scared wot will happen! but it would great to see him back in our charts!1

Im past caring now - when all is said and done, is HE willin 2 do The Work?

Cuz he sure as hell liked passing the buck when Rave flopped like a souffle in an oven.

I just dont think 'responsibility' is a word he knows: & we all know what his vocabulary is like...
