Im not sure to blame an album or his actions, or warners.. there was a lot of friction at the time..

I think it was a mixture of things.. although there was nothing on that album that would get any radio play

As an artist he really came across as an asshole during that period. I remember seehing him on some awards show where they had all these artists who got together and sang some peace song at the end, and there Prince was with "Slave" painted on his face, wearing a yellow jumpsuit and sucking on a sucker. The guy next to him put his arm around him and tried to get him to sing but he just stood there. That and the whole name change thing killed him. Most people just didn't get it. I know why he did it, and understand it, but at the same time, I feel like he could have gone about it in a way taht more people could have understood and appreciated. Having said that, I think Come (And pretty much all his albums from the 90's) is great. Not ALL of it, but the music and arrangement of the title track, the pure boom of "Pheremone" and the just straight up SOUL of "Dark" get me every time. It was definitely different, but it was an artistic statement that sounded differnt from anything he'd relased thus far and I'm sure that's how he wanted it.

I'm not saying that he didn't release really good music or anything,it's just it was a conscious effort not to make them too big.I remember reading an interview wher he said he was gonna give people "what they need" and not necessarily what they want.

Nice line smile Would you happen to know where/when this interview was from? I'd like to check it out.

Sorry,I really can't remember.I remember I thought about that alot because he had moved away from his earlier sounds and he was changing.I think this was before or right as parade was released.I would like to find that myself.I really never kept all the stuff I had from back then as far as interviews.I only kept the music.

Purple Rain was actually the start of his commercial decline. Before that album,he scraped and fought and preened all he could to reach the top. After he reached it he did all he could to rebel against it.This rebelliousness became more and more pronounced over the subsequent years and albums.

I'm not saying that he didn't release really good music or anything,it's just it was a conscious effort not to make them too big.I remember reading an interview wher he said he was gonna give people "what they need" and not necessarily what they want. So,it was a two-fold rebellion:1 aganinst being too big(manageable) and 2,fighting to be a pure artist and not just a pop star.Prince still doesn't give us all we ask for because he doesn't want to be limited by anything other than his artistsic whims. He realized that the true fans would still be there to support. He isn't surprised by any sales declines.Critics and casuals have been.Prince orchestrated most of this.

he should have looked ahead a little farther, and realized he'd spent all of the 90's trying to gain back that commercial appeal/audience he'd squandered post-'84 razz

Anxiety

I've been rediscovering the mid '90s stuff over the past few weeks and really getting into stuff that at the time I wasn't so crazy about...Come is one of my fave Prince albums, even though when it first came out, I thought it was pretty rotten. It doesn't really "fit" with a lot of his glory days material, but it's a really fantastic piece of work.
