Vinyl!

Who misses all the vinyl releases?

Grabbing the 7" and 12" remix. Hearing something a bit out of whack and playing it backwards on the turntable to find the message. The little messages scratched into the centre piece of the record.

Buying the 12" of Purple Rain, getting home and opening the sleeve to find you have a purple vinyl version!!

sigh... cd's are much more practical but where is the romance, the mystery, that feeling of carrying your bag home from the wrekka stow and the anticipation as the needle hit for the first time.
In the distance a light shines and I know it is mine. Someday I will touch it because it calls me. It says cross the line, cross the line. I know everything is not always what it seems, so I pinch myself daily just in case it's a dream

I don't have the money for all that anymore, so I'm kinda glad things are toned down. However, it was very fun to go "record hunting" on "lost weekends" in Minneapolis back in the late 80s/early 90s, though.

me, i wasn't old enough back in the day to experience the true 'freshness' of each 12" single that came out but it's still interestin to hear about. i have 3 12-inch singles in my collection and they're pretty awesome.

I don't miss their warping tendencies in the summertime. Don't even have a record player to play the 12" of Kiss, Dance Electric and Jungle Love/The Bird and a few W&L 7" amongst other rubbish, on my shelf.

i have a wonderful metal mox with granite inner chamber that i keep all my vinyl in to prevent warping. I loved buying every single version back then, but like everyone else, my priorities have changed and i'm afraid i wouldn't be able to afford to buy every vinyl release nowadays. I still would though and then i would have to starve. Thank god for the CD!!
It were proper bo I tell the!! Bo Selecta!

the memory that makes me miss prince vinyl:

getting the america 12" and playing the b-side "girl" backwards for the first time.

I miss the packaging that the 12" format offered. I miss the clarity and subtle nuances in sound quality that vinyl has over CD's that were mastered in the '80's through mid 90's.

I don't miss snap. I don't miss krackle. I 'specially don't miss big cousin pop.

I don't care how clean the wax is. I don't care how much the stylus and turntable sets a mofo back, if the sounds weren't put there at the time of recording... I don't wanna hear it.

What I miss is Prince's willingness to accomodate the format.

Art design, photography, an actual b-side. Damn, I miss those days.
