Remember when you used to see Prince in teen magazines? I remember when Prince and his empire took over magazines like Right On! and Black Beat. I did some research and dug up some of these old issues of Prince's heydays. It was great seeing old photos and stories about the Minneapolis empire. Some articles on him were interesting, some were lousy. That was back when R&B, Pop and Rap were of great quality. Who else can remeber reading these back in the day?
Oh, and these were American publications for those of you int'l folk. But I'm pretty sure our hero has been written up in various teen magazines around the world. So the foreigners can share with us what magazines or other press they can remember back when P was DA MAN!!! NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Yeah, those were fun! Every month I'd head to the newstand and scan through all the Black Beats and Right Ons!
Most of the 80's had great articles. I clipped a bunch and have many a sheet all filed away by era! My favorites are the Parade and Sign O The Times era's. There was one RIght On issue where Prince was in that cool outfit from the Under The Cherry Moon movie, the grey and black one...and it was a cover of Right On, and they had a BIG feature on him and the movie and music. I also liked all the Sign O The Times reports! Lot's of cool info for those in the US who never saw the live shows...! Anyone remember a report of the post 87 MTV awards performance at the Reseda Country Club and they had one photo of Prince singing with a super cool peach and black outfit and long hair...like he fixed different for the aftershow..I saw it but never picked it up. Very rare photo. Anyways, yeah those mags were our Prince.org of the times!

I have a bunch of those Right On!s & Black Beats too.
In addition to the Prince articles, they would also have a lot of stuff on the Associated Artists as well. Lots of news tidbits & articles about Sheila, Morris, Jesse...even Mazarati!

Oh yes,I remember those days.Back in the 80s,Prince was regularly featured in magazines like Black Beat,Right On and Rock N'Soul.I used to buy those mags everytime I went to the supermarket.Lots of great articles and pictures. Prince invited Black Beat editor Steve Ivory to Paisley Park in 1991,right before 'Diamonds and Pearls' came out. There was a cover story about it.

Hey, remember Cynthia Horner (whom he used to always thank in his liner notes) doing that cool couple hook-up and having Prince and Chaka Khan (who were BOTH freaks at that time) together?
I thought that coupling was brilliant back then. Didn't I also hear that Prince had a crush on Patrice Rushen? Rise up

I thought that coupling was brilliant back then. Didn't I also hear that Prince had a crush on Patrice Rushen? I remember when Flo Jenkins was the editor way before Cynthia Horner. Never missed an issue of Right On! But, yeah, I always bought Black Beat (my brother Rudy from highschool is the editor now. He was a BIG Prince fan. My sister and I used to call him Rudy Rude Boy. We all went to the 1999 Tour together), and Rock-N-Soul too! RNS had this feature in the back where they would print readers artwork. I submitted a couple of things. My drawing (or watercolor?) of Prince (think it was the Controversy album cover) and a watercolor of Vanity made the issue. Man, what I wouldn't give to see those issues again. Actually, I bought ANY magazine that had Prince on the cover! I still own a few.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention Rock & Soul magazine. I used to got to this library around my way and they would have these magazines in their archives. In 1985, according to the aforementioned magazine, the 2 biggest artists were Prince and New Edition. Much respect to Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike & Ralph, but you know who I'm gonna choose outta the 2. Our hero was untouchable that year.
Good times, good times. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

And you know the sad thing now is, there's probably a major chance of not seeing Pirnce in any of those magazines now. They've been overrrun by Eminem, Beyonce, and B2Gay. Damn shame. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

This is from Right On! (4/82). Prince wasn't on the cover (the group Lakeside was). But that was the cool thing about these types of magazines back then. Even if he wasn't on the cover, there was always some mention of him inside.

Alright! Big up to Deb for the scans. Those were the days, weren't they? That was back when you used to see real artists like Michael Jackson & Tina Turner. Now, if you look at the teen mags today all you see are "pop stars". NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

brooke shields? and omg...i'm in love with that pic of wendy & lisa, it's awesome!!!

that was my favorite article ever!!! (i am a big wendy and lisa fan) Unfortunately my father threw away all of my magazine collection when I went away to school and I have never been able to replace it (the Rolling Stone). "a poor fool indeed is a man who adopts a manner of thinking for others"

I actually still have that issue of Rolling Stone featuring Wendy & Lisa. Thanks for showing that. That Prince and Vanity pic was pretty rare. And since when did Brooke Shields date Prince? That's the tabloids for ya .
Also, if you guys notice that pic with those Prince quotes, he mentioned that he couldn't read music. Makes you wonder how he became the musical genius that he was and still is. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

I thought I'd bring this thread back to say one thing I forgot to mention. It's like, when I read those mags now I see that Prince was sooo above and beyond what the style was in Soul/R&B. I mean, even though his style was very influential, he was still very different from what was ip, like, say, leather jackets or parachute pants. Although I will say that the jheri curls were universal for those times. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.
