No they did not. I remember reading they "did some stuff on it, sent it back and never heard anything back" from him. klaatu said: Same thing for Roadhouse Garden.
Nope, they never received any tapes to work on, and they never received a request from Prince to work on it - he posted about it on L4OA, and that was it - Understandably, the first they heard about it was after the event from a fan who sent them a message about it through their then official site. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Uh? Which lyrics are we talking about? I'm sure I read this thread. Somehow it was implied that the version of DM used in CB didn't feature W&L due to Prince's homophobia. What did I miss?! Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

hold your horses a little. For Emancipation he sent them In This Bed I scream for them to work on it. They turned the offer down. Same thing for Roadhouse Garden. I believe the Wendy and Lisa parts have been deletedcbecause they "belonged" to and featured the girls so he didn't wanted to steal their work and deleted these parts (remember the samples not credited thing is not of prince's taste.) On the other hand the solo/collaboration effort of your last post could be an explanation also... As the CD set was release as a prince (o+>) release those part got dropped. But right there are several versions of the songus. But the version here is not the one intended for the Crystal ball original album which was more of a conceptual collaborative effort. That was before he went JW.

I hear what you're saying, but for me it's hard to make it much broader in the context of that song, considering this lyric comes right before he says something like "HIV, they say they have a cure, I'm not sure." (Haven't listened to that song in ages and seeing as how I'm gonna buy it with TCI, I figure why dig it up now?) He certainly has never come out explicitly against homosexuals, no doubt. That would be disastrous for him, I think. Well I'm not convinced. Why? Those sentences from the song are telegraphic sentences and not only gays are exposed to HIV. that leads me to think that the fruit of this seed cold be the potential virus we ALL have to fear. gooeythehamster said: It is obvious Prince went out of his way to make sure Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman were not included in any of the songs on Crystal Ball.
Is this why we get such a strange collection of songs, becuz he is mad at them girls? They were the only ones of The Revolution not thanked in the liner notes. Wendy gets a mention, but only becuz the bugger could not remember who sang background vocals... For instance, Dream Factory with W&L in it is a better version. Is Prince really that childish in his dislikes? I guess he is. [This message was edited Tue Nov 11 3:33:12 PST 2003 by gooeythehamster] Dream Factory with W&L in a better version? I must have missed something! I just listened to the version of Dream Factory on Crystal Ball and the one on the original Dream Factory album, and apart from the one on Dream Factory being slightly edited length-wise they sound identical musically to me (apart from the Crystal Ball version having perfect sound quality obviously). I always used to asume it was Wendy and Lisa doing the backing vocals on this track, but if Prince says it was Susannah, then it must have been. There's no big conspiracy as to why there's no tracks with noticable Wendy and Lisa input on Crystal Ball. He was saving that material for Roadhouse Garden, that's all. The title track (Crystal Ball) is merely the version from the original Crystal Ball album from 1987 rather than the shorter version (which featured Wendy and Lisa) from Dream Factory. Wendy and Lisa Quit. Yes Prince did say when it first happened that he fired them. But that was just a lie. And since then Prince has been very bitter. This is WHY HE NEVER WANTED THE DREAM FACTORY ALBUM TO SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY. And you never see anything with their name attached to it
In 2000 Prince called W&L and asked them if they wanted to play on VH1 Honors. They said yes, "Let's do an accustic version of Purple Rain, or another song." Prince said no let's just go on stage and jam something instrumental. They said they had no intrest in just jamming. And Prince never got back to them. Yes, Prince has since tried to talk to them, through song or hidden messages, but I think it's been so long and so many things were said, that we will never find out the truth. Is the album Dream Factory / Crystal Ball a better album with the W&L mixes and flavor? Yes. W&L always enhanced Prince's music in a way only they could. Like it or not they brought things to Prince's music that not even Prince could. "So strange that no one stayed at the end of the Parade..." - Wendy & Lisa's "Song About" on their 1987 self-titled album.

yeah, they quit before the parade tour, he got bobby to convince them to stay for the tour. Then he fired them. Yes, fired, let them go. They would've left regardless, but he did, in fact, fire them. And since then Prince has been very bitter. This is WHY HE NEVER WANTED THE DREAM FACTORY ALBUM TO SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY. And you never see anything with their name attached to it
he may have been bitter in '87, but '89-now? doubt it. Especially since he's been o speaking terms with them since '89. And he wasn't exactly bitter because they quit. He had already started to distance himself from them because he wanted to work alone again, like he had before they came along. W&L quit for the same reason, they wanted to do their own thing. Wendy had also had enough because of the whole susannah thing. The real reason why he was so bitter was because of Susannah. He didn't contact them for a good two years because of her. She found out he was cheating on her and she left him, that's why he was so bitter in '87. He's moved on, he had moved on way before the crystal ball set was released. In 2000 Prince called W&L and asked them if they wanted to play on VH1 Honors. They said yes, "Let's do an accustic version of Purple Rain, or another song." Prince said no let's just go on stage and jam something instrumental. They said they had no intrest in just jamming. And Prince never got back to them. sort of true. He didn't want them to jam, he wanted them to do something flashy, can't remember exactly what it was, but it wasn't just jamming. And that "flashy" thing just wasn't their cup of tea. As far as the homophobic theory goes, nope. First of all, the "Crystal Ball" set was released wayyy before he became a JW. As far as now goes, nope. True, he's a JW, but i know plently of JWs that aren't homophobic. Sure, they may not exactly agree with the lifestyle but they aren't prejudice against gays. Prince is a very open-minded guy. I know people that know him, he's not like that. and, just because he's a JW doesn't mean he agrees with everything the religion stands for. He's NOT homophobic. And I find it very commical that "possessed" would be cited as a source of confirmation for ANYTHING. And as far as why there's vertially no W&L on the "crystal ball" set, see borris' post. okay, I'm done. ~KiKi

Wendy and Lisa are wonderful in their own right and were a vital part of the Revolution but 20 years is dulling the senses here.Prince's music became funkier after the Revolution.Hell the arguement can be made that Shiela E contributed more to Prince's music than Wendy and Lisa.

True. Just look at the bandmembers... Sheila has been the scout for quite a few of P's players... Eddie M. who played on ATWIAD... and signaled the inauguration of horns back in P's arrangements Bonnie Boyer, Sheila, Miko, Levi(?), Rhonda, Katt, Rad, Renato Seems like playin with Sheila is an audition for P's bands. He seems to have a lot of trust for Sheila's instinct. The argument could be made but it would be wrong considering Sheila doesn't share any co-writing credits on any Prince albums and Wendy and Lisa do. When any other band member of Prince's is on the cover of Rolling Stone (before it became a MTV era piece of crap) then we'll talk.
