standing at the alter

Am I the only one who thinks this is actually a great song?
It's a bitter sweet tune, with a catchy beat and probably could've been a hit if it had the right production team.
It was featured on the 1-800-new funk album, by the artist Margie Cox. It was one of few the songs on the whole album I actually liked Besides Love Sign & Mayte's if I love you 2night. I think Margie Cox probably could've been something if she wasn't signed with paisely park records first lol. Anyways maybe some artist will remake this song and make it the hit it was supposed 2 be.

It's a GREAT song! The highlight of the 1-800-New Funk CD.On this track,Margie is singing so much better than her 'Tamara and the Seen' days, and the song is amazing, with a slight Motown feel to it.

There is a 1995 interview with Margie in Uptown magazine, and she was talking about the Prince-produced album that she recorded. She even mentioned that she had just shot a video for the first single "Standing At The Altar".Does anyone have the full details/tracklist for this album? Obviously, the album was never released but is it circulating on bootleg?

Another "coulda-been-a-massive-hit" song.

Damn Prince and his silly record label activities.

I love this song but the 12" Mix is HORRIBLE!!! They just butchered that song with that mix!

i think he's talking about a later project that Margie and Prince worked on, which was shaping up to be a solo for her in the early 90's, seperate from the (MC) Flash stuff.

Prince resumed work on the Flash project with Margie Cox in late june 1991 , recording 2 further songs "hey u" and "standing at the altar" . The latter was recorded by a new line-up of Flash , tentatively called "the new Mc Flash band" , which include Morris Hayes (the band became Carmen's backing band group when she opened concerts in 1992 diamonds & pearls tour).

Having failed 2 attract much interest in the Flash project album from records labels , Prince and Cox decided 2 discard the group project idea in favour of a Cox solo project.
In november 1991 , they re-recorded "we can hang" and did more work on some of the existing songs but the Cox solo album was never finished. The only Flash/Cox tracks 2 see the light of day is "standing in the altar" , released in 1994 on the 1800 new funk compilation , and "whistlin' Kenny" , released as a single b-side.

yes, so somewhere in between what you were talking about and what i was talking about.

the way DavidEye was referring to her comments, she seems to be talking about her solo project.

from my understanding Margie says she had made an album under paisley park and is still waiting for it to be released she was promise and then it was shelved.

just thought you would like to know. she is a great singer. she plays at Bunkers in mpls. every Monday night with a band called Dr. mambos combo.

Micheal Bland sits in when he is in town. very good band.

if you haven't checked them out yet you should.

I've wondered about this before - is this true? Was Whistlin' Kenny really released? The UK CD single I bought had 17 (by Madhouse) and Standing At The Altar 12" Mix as it's b-sides. Where was Whistlin' Kenny the b-side?

Man, I agree with you, its a great song! I don't know why ppl hate it so much! I mean, yes its a pop song, a little over-saturated with production. But the backup singers(including Prince) and Margie Cox sound excellent! The whole theme of the song is tear-inducing and had a great melody. The 12 inch version is horrible, sounds like someone just picked up the needle and dropped it anywhere and hit record. I would have loved to hear a guitar solo or an extended organ solo.

Funny, in an interview with Margie Cox in Uptown, she mentioned that she was SURPRISED to see the song actually released on that album since she did it a long time before it was finally released.

I love this song... Looove it!!

By the way, on the first release of her last album, in the liner notes, Margie says, "No thanks to Prince." She later felt bad about saying that, and had the liner notes revised.

i pulled 1-800 out for the first time in about 5 years a couple of months ago.
nod
Standing at the Altar is definetley for me the standout track in this compilation.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Really? That's new to me.

CD5/1994/EU (NPG 6066-5):
1. Margie Cox - Standing At the Altar
(The 1-800 New Funk Version) (3:56)
2. Margie Cox - Standing At the Altar (5:59)
(Extended Version)
3. Madhouse - 17 (5:23)

12"/1991/USA (BR 72531-1)
A1. Margie Cox - Standing At the Altar (3:55)
A2. Margie Cox - Whistlin' Kenny (2:45)
B1. Margie Cox - Standing At the Altar (3:55)
B2. Margie Cox - Whistlin' Kenny (2:45)

That's what my CD & vinyl are sayin'. And I've never ever seen another edition of the 1994 CD5. If you have one, what's the label's order #?

Oops. Have to correct myself. The vinyl of course has "Standing..." on Side A and "Kenny" on A. The labeling is somewhat confusing.
