Prince's use of sound effects

Prince- please stop the silly sound effects! What's My Name would have been so much better without the scratching siren at the chorus that drowns out the very funky bass playing. Walk Don't Walk really didn't need the stupid car horns in it. Emacipation drowned in a mix of sound effects that took away from the instrumentation on some finely written songs!

Prince is one of the most amazing musicians out there and some songs are ruined by the use of very unneccesary sound effects. Man in a Uniform from The Truth is another prime example.

I'm not saying that you should stop using them completely- My Computer for example makes very good use of sound effects. But when you're in the studio and you've just finished a song, please don't start thinking "Oh I need a helicopter right here and maybe a frog belching on the chorus." The music is fine and better off without it!

...your problem here is the use of the word 'effects'. Consider them not as effects but as intrinsic to the music and there is no problem. Boy - what a hang up!

I can do with those sound effects. The only one that really gets under my skin is the clipping scissors in the one song off of that one "Kamasutra" song. My thoughts through it were "What, is this when he cut his hair after his 'Graffiti Bridge' hairdo and went to the 'typhoon' 'do for 'Diamonds & Pearls?'" It was just too weird for me. wacky

That would be Statik's programming - some (not all) of the production on those albums around that period were great, but the programming was just awesome.

4 good FX - u just have 2 listen 2 something like 'The Sensual Everafter' or 'Superfunkcalifragisexy' (listen 2 those awesome background vox how they leap in and out of the mix - great.)

There are some gems production-wise, (like Lovesexy 4 instance - crap mastering due 2 analogue sources, but man it's deep - so much going on.)

On the flip-sde though, I have 2 admit that he is guilty time and time again 2 stop 'twiddling' and just let them fly free.

Surprisingly enough, I think the best album (production wise) is TRC... creative, musical, religious and personal thoughts aside he finally got it spot-on.

Give me a break.. I think every sound that was composed/created for The Truth is what made that album so fucking blunt and great.. I dig his use of sound effects.. give the songs color.

Yelsiap

Regarding TMBGITW , why did he use the same effect in the Gold experience instead of the cricket sound as heard in the single version, when he sings "when the night..."[cricket/insect sound here], and the album version goes "when the night..."[bird chirp sound here]

I have some of the musical sound effects (library) he used - like the tape loop at the beginning of Push, or the rhythm noise in return of the bump squad and the good life...

Well, seeing as the name of that track is "Cutz" one would assume that the scissor sound was what the rest of the tune was built around. I think it is quite amusing, (although I think Kamasutra rips off Cirque du Soleil)
