The Black Album- Is it any good and where can you get it?

Thanks for all the info on the Gold Experience everybody. I've heard some clips from the Black Album and it sounds pretty damn funky, but again it appears to be deleted (although Amazon.co.uk do seem to be offering it.) Any advice?

It is damn good, a funky classic.

Try the usual suspects like ebay, hmv.co.uk or play.com (if you're in the UK)

It's funky, it's good. Get it!!

Any decent record shop will have a copy, amazon are OK (postage can be pricey though), or there's always Ebay.co.uk.

you crazy! I probably play this album more than any one in my collection.

It is out of print, but enough of them were sold that I don't expect you'd have to pay more than $10 - $15 dollars for it on E-Bay.

Must Have.

Either 2freaky fakes the funk or he's being sarcastic.

definitely, the first few tracks on the album are excellent, the 2nd half isnt quite as good,(just like lovesexy really),and its a fonky fonky piece of work ,
easily the most enjoyable album Prince coulda released
in 1988.

Problem with BLACK was the legit release was OUT OF CONTEXT. That funk should have come out right on the heels of SOTT to ruff up the pop songs on there. Boots were readily available all over the place in LA, but a lot of hardcore funkstas saw Prince trying to be pure pop with the leadoff of LOVESEXY being "Alphabet Street" and were turned off (I won't even mention that gay-ass cover again). I admittedly came back a couple of years later.

I beg to differ. Granted, the two best songs come right at the beginning (Le Grind and Cindy C., two of the most ass-shakingly great songs P has ever put out), but the second half has Superfunkycalifragisexy, Bob George and the magnificently nasty Rockhard In A Funky Place.

A most excellent, deep-dark-forest-chocolate-cake-funk album. Magically delicious, a definite must-have.

"Bob George" alone is worth it's weight in gold. The rest
is cool as well "Rockhard" is stupifyingly funky.

Trust me, you can't loose with this album. It's classic.

In my opinion, I believe u have to be a true prince fan to appreciate this album.. or a junkie on funk.

He had the right ideas for the album, its too bad at the time he was using cheesy effects that made it sound dated.. other than that, its pretty experimental and 100% interesting. I dig the album regarding all the significance that goes within that and outcome effect after it was "released" and lovesexy came into play..

eek

Wow.

To each his own, I suppose. Actually, it took me a few years to fully get into it. But once it took hold, I couldn't for the life of me figure out why it hadn't in the first place.

Its the dark flip side of Lovesexy.
They make a great pair.

And I admit I did not respect the Black Album when I recieved it on boot as mch as I should have...it was more a myth having release to me becasue I had just come off of SOTT and was expecting something more..feel th e same way about Lovesexy..but now of course I respect both releases and can get into the Jazz Black Funk of Black Album

This album is so incredibly underappreciated. And being firmly entrenched in the 'light' of 'Lovesexy', it tends to fall even farther by the wayside.

What I find particularly funny is the idea that Prince never wanted this album to be heard. I'm of the opinion that his ego demanded it be heard. In fact Prince's own words support this. I just wish that both albums would have been released at the same time. Yin and Yang. It would have made for a much stronger moment in Prince's career.

i disagree. the album is great from beginning to end except perhaps bob george, but even this song grew on me, kind of like movie star.
