Is there really a 'new Prince'?

A lot of fans here on the org always seem to divide Prince's career into two era's: the 'WB era' and the 'freedom era'. As a result numerous discussions have been held in respect to the question the what was better: the new Prince or the old Prince.

IMO these discussions seem utterly meaningless, because I feel like there is no 'new Prince'. Okay the man has changed, but didn't he always change his 'style' every (couple of) year(s). If you compare 'Purple Rain' to 'Around the world in a day' you hear two completely differnt albums.

When TRC was released lots of people considered this album as a completely different direction. But is this really the case? Songs like 'She loves me for me', 'The everlasting now', 'mellow', '1+1+1=3' are good examples of Prince tunes that are not so different from other classical tracks like 'I wish you heaven', 'housequake', 'New position' etc.

To me Prince is still Prince, and I love his recent stuff just as much as I love his old stuff.

There is no NEW PRINCE> Just an evolving Prince.

So your own view is one that I can understand. Even though I myself like his old output somewhat better. It would be unfair to Mr Nelson to grade him on the way I think about his music.
