I DETESTED GB...upon watching it the second time. First time I watched it was when I was Eight/Nine, somewhere around those ages, and I loved it, mainly because I was small naive and Prince-loving. I cried when Prince died in UTCM.
But then,I watched Graffiti Bridge a second time and WAS sick (tho not due to the film wink), anyway, the film was dreadful and I ended up staring at a lamp.

I think Prince really believed in the project, it's wierd with all the unreleased, shelved albums and projects, he held onto Graffiti Bridge right through promoting SOTT, the Black Album, Lovesexy, Rave, Batman.

He must have really wanted to do it.

I guess he was eager to finally get it done once he had a chance to after Batman, and maybe that eagerness to finally make the film led him to choose speed over quality.

The film is nasty with a campital N, it looks exactly like what it is, a cheap film produced in a studio, the street/bridge shots look like some neon version of Sesame Street.

I wonder if it would have had the same low production values had it been produced when originally intended?

It is the absolute nadir of Prince's career...the very thing that made him a laughing stock..and his genius was called 2 question.

Cheap, an awful script, bad acting no plot.

It is without doubt the WORST moment and item of Prince's ENTIRE career.

First of all I've seen it 35 times in the theatre...

Second, U have to look at it not as a "hollywood" production film.

Thirdly, I think too much got it the way during the process of the film at the time for Prince.

And lastly I think Prince wanted it to be rather low budgeted and very symbolic, that's why it appears ludicrous to the passing fan.

I believe that the lead went from his intention of casting Madonna to Kin Bassinger to Ingrid Chavez...

and Madonna denounced the script at a meeting as stupid.

I think most people here "get it", it's just a very bad film.

Sure we all like it, for the same reason we like UTCM, it's Prince, it's his kookiness in there.

But it's a hotch-potch of a movie, barely keeps you interested in the non-existent plot, and the characters have all the warmth and charm of a rotting horse carcus.

I heard somewhere that Prince wanted to make a movie featuring 'The Time' but Warners wouldn't give him the money unless he was in it.

I read somewhere where Prince was asked whether he thought it was a risk making another movie, "What risk? It's 6 million of someone else's money, where's the risk in that?!"

Listen to Prince speak, he talks in a poetic but airy-fairy vague way, going off on tangents. It's only natural he would write a script in the same fashion. Prince at this point in his career was trying to control everything and do everything himself (what's changed?) but he should have handed the reigns on the script and direction over to someone else.

It was a vague sequel to Purple Rain - I reckon they should have made it a more direct sequel set in the same gritty real world. I like the idea of Prince and The Time duelling musically, I like the bit when they are sampling each others lines with a keyboard and throwing them back. There are moments in this film - Morris is such a great character - but overall, it was pretty disappointing. At least it was colourful!

At least Prince knew when to give films a rest, unlike Madonna...

I agree with the statement that bad movies are fun. Yes, it's absolute shite. But I derive the same masochistic pleasure from watching GB that I used to get from The Wiz. Every legendary musician has to make a self-serving, egocentric, low-budget film showcasing their acting "talents". Let him have this one.

And besides... it's good for a laugh and the music ROCKS. GB has to be my favourite P album of all time. boxed

I think the problem with Graffitti bridge is that he got caught between writing a musical and a movie. People wanted to see a followup to purple rain. They got a musical instead of a purple rain 2. He should have used the same director that did the previous movie. Some parts I genuinely liked such as the "idea" of the bands battling for glam slam. The "idea" is what keeps me watching the movie. The battle between the spiritual and the sexual is what the man was probably trying to display. If Prince would have scrapped the whole idea of a "purple rain 2" I think he would have had more success. Oh, and the man should have invested more money on dem sets! Holla!

I bought it 2 weeks ago. It's almost uniformly DREADFUL. However, there are some passable moments...Elephants and Flowers being one...and in general, most of Prince's musical performances. But as a MOVIE, it is utterly, utterly bad.

For some reason though, I'm still sort of glad to have an official copy on video.

You guys keep wasting your time & energy devoting threads like every month to how bad GB supposedly is.But if it is so bad,why do you keep starting threads about it,ENOUGH ALREADY!! How many times do I have to read about how cheap the sets are-WHO CARES.I was too busy being affected & moved to be worrying about "how cheap"the sets look.Yes,affected & moved by things like when he talks about looking for a green light, that says its ok to continue-MAYBE SOME OF US(LIKE ME)MAY ACTUALLY FEEL THAT WAY SOMETIMES! You ever think of that? I don't understand how something that could move you,if you let it, be considered bad? If this rant annoys you, well most of the posts in this thread annoy me,so I had to let this out.

Well I hope you feel better. It is always better to just back away sometimes then to continue on the rollercoaster ride. Honestly, I liked Graffiti Bridge's concept. I love what Prince tried to show. But note, if you go to Rollingstone magazine and read the article on the movie, "it's the mag with Prince on the cover around the time of the movie", you will see that Prince himself stated that the sets were cheap. LOL. Really it is not that big of a deal. I am sure that it affected you in a good way. I wasn't totally dissatisfied with the production and always look for the good in everything. Holla.

So I guess I really am the only one who enjoyed it. I mean, it's just one of those flicks that you shouldn't take too seriously. You could say it's like Prince's version of "The Girl Can't Help It".

What I actually didn't like about the movie was the fact that Prince was getting dogged hard by his enemies of funk (The Time). They set is club on fire, destroyed his equipment, etc., and what does Prince do???

TICK, TICK, BANG!!! giggle disbelief
