Is there a story behind Good Love being on the Bright Lights Big City OST? I've never seen anything about why it was on the OST, or why that track was chosen.
Just wondering if there's any story at either end (Prince's end, or the film makers end) as to why Prince, why that film, or why that track? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well I just bought the DVD, first time I've seen it since taping it off the TV when I was kid and wanted hear this Camille song I hadn't heard before. I remember not being that impressed, but then we only hear like a verse and a chorus - when I got the soundtrack I was blown away I totally fell in love with in. I've played it to death since of course, but it's still a A-grade track.
This is just my theory, since the movie is big on drugs, I can't see Prince knocking on the producers door for a song in it, I imagine they wanted a Prince track, maybe after hearing the Black Album, Le Grind/Cindy C would have worked well - Prince didn't want those tracks out, so he gave them Good Love, an upbeat party track in the same vein. // [This message was edited Wed Nov 5 14:48:32 PST 2003 by Romance1600] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It's in one of the club scenes, the 2nd one if I remember, not really distinct, but I guess it is since Prince's sound is quite unlike anyone elses! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I can fill in few bits, some fact, some speculation. My Sister In Law was working for WEA at the time.
When the film was made, they were very concerned how to market it. Afterall, they were taking an all american "cutie", in Michael J Fox, and turning him into a drug addict. The film was not expected to fair to well, and WB were particularly concerned that it would not do well outside of the US, as it was a very American film. At the same time, cool soundtracks were only just becoming the "new" marketing tool. Sure we'd had hits like "Take my Breath Away" from Top Gun, but events like Bryan Adams "Everything I do" or Whitneys "I will Always Love You" were still a few years off. The WB directors instisted on a modern soundtrack, to help sell the album, AND to plug their new artists. Prince was currently selling big time, especially in Europe, an area they needed the film to do well in. So they went out of there way, to add a "European chart flavour" to the soundtrack. Prince was the plum pick, a rare Depeche Mode B-side helped give it a "coolness", while the use of New Orders "true Faith" gave them a massive European single, that had yet to break America. I believe the scenes were already shot before Good Love was added, they just needed a song to match the BPM of the night club scene, much like the way "Trust" replaced "Baby I'm a Star" in Batman. I'm guessing here, but if Prince was asked to supply a song to match the BPM, Good Love happened to fit perfectly, and it was at the time, a left over from an abandoned project, so he didn't mind giving it up. The only shame is that it was never released as as a single. Waldens single from the soundtrack was a massive hit. Prince's would have been huge, but it would have taken away from the current releases he had going on, so my guess is he or WB refused to let it out. How Good Love never made SOTT I'll never know. My guess is he felt there was not room for it and U Got The look, and the newer song got the vote over a track that had been completed for a while. I think good love is one of THE great missed chances in Prince's choices of singles. The full version, on the BLBC soundtrack is fantastic. Possibly one of Prince's greatest commercial tracks, hidden away on a less than known soundtrack. . | |

Thanks for that SquirrelMeat, makes a lot of sense.
And I can totally see your idea about U Got The Look replacing Good Love on Crystal Ball during the cut to SOTT. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
