The rainbow children was the first prince album i heard.

I get the general jist that most fans here believe that the rainbow children has had no effect on new prince fans but i beg to differ.

i'm 18 and in 2002 a friend showed me the hits. I then heard through another friend that Prince had recently released a great album.

Three weeks later i bought the rainbow children and emancipaiton on the same day. The rainbow children was my first album I listened to and i've been in love with it ever since. i even enjoyed three discs of emancipation after that.

if it was not for the rainbow children i would have not have backtracked with such haste into prince's hisory(finding every ablum and every related artist album in one year) because i would not give prince the same respect as a musician.

for me, the rainbow children is prince's greatest ever.

sorry for another rainbow children thread, i just have a urge.

Nice to hear a different perspective on a great album! It wasn't my first album (that was Batman) but I do really like it - great musicianship and a daring subject matter! It may not be a "classic" but it's a step in the right direction after NPS, Rave and the other lacklustre sets. I just think he should drop a new commercially availble (but not commercial in content) killer album soon, to keep up the momentum he's building at the moment!

I agree with you. TRC is a good album. I was genuinely surprised when I first heard it. I think the reason most people, who don't like it, don't like it is because it doesn't sound like anything he did between 1978-1988.

Well, it's great to know that his music does still attract new fans!

And you're right, I certainly wouldn't have put TRC down as an album that would attract new fans. I don't rate it much myself, but, as has been said before, his music is like fine wine, and I'm not giving up on it until I've explored it fully (even though I've yet to manage to listen to it all the way through in one sitting).

So, as you've now backtracked and heard all his output, what else really, really grabbed you?

Ah, interesting choices. I discovered Prince (like many people) when Purple Rain was around, so my favourite of his (then quite small) back catalogue was Dirty Mind. It blew my (dirty) mind. If I had to choose one Prince album and was only given 1 minute to choose - it'd be between Dirty Mind and The Truth (although if it really came down to it then my choice would be - if I'm only allowed one Prince album then I'm not goin').

The way I started loving and adoring the Little man was when my older bro played me "Daddy Pop" from Diamonds and Pearls when I was 7 on holiday in Scotland. I didn't stop singing the chorus for the rest of the holiday, and then he got so annoyed that he bought me The Hits box set. I've loved Prince since, and now I'm 15 (think - I started at 7!!! I must b the yungest prince fan ever).

I first of Prince at the time when the video for Kiss was released. It got to the number one spot here in Belgium.

Honestly, I didn't like it. I was too yougn, and was into MJ at the time.

One year later, my elder brother bought Sign 'o' the Times on cassette, and he became a fan. He got LoveSexy, 1999 and The Black Album from a nephew.

In 1989, when Batman came out, there was an incredible hype surrounding the movie and the soundtrack. My brother bought the album on cassette and blasted The Future in our living room. Although, I was still an MJ fan (and we had heavy discussions about which artist was best!... the eighties... sigh), I was completely blown awayt by the song!

Today, Batman still has a special place in my heart, because it got me into Prince. The first Prince album I bought was Diamonds and Pearls, and then I started working my way back.

DIAMONDGEEZA

my first prince album was diamonds and pearls then graffiti bridge(which i actually liked more than D&P).i cannot include batman as my first as a movie soundtrack limits what an artist can do creatively and generally movie soundtracks are pathetic.the only batman tune that stood out was 'the arms of orion'.The rainbow Children was a good intro to the modern prince but whoever doesnt give his older material a chance or a listen is missing out on one of the greatest musicians fron the 20th/21st century. As sheena easton said"prince is a modern day mozart" and i agree.

I can admire your opinion, as you weren't even born when Purple Rain dropped.

It is cool that you caught on to TRC and Emancipation. You have essentially discovered Prince the "independent artist" in a very experimental stage, just as he was after Purple Rain. Of course, fans of that era will not compare TRC or Emancipation favorably (I personally don't dig it as much), but I thought the same things about Parade, Sign O' The Times and Lovesexy that you think about TRC and Emancipation.

Keep listening. If you liked TRC and Emancipation, I'd recommend several others, including 1999, Dirty Mind, ATWIAD, SOTT, Lovesexy, Graffiti Bridge, prince and The Gold Experience.

I have a few younger friends who have heard TRC (it's doing the rounds at music school - for sound engineers). They are being blown away by this album, and not because of the lyrics.
I agree with monte, if I had never heard a Prince song before, but I listened to this album now, at this point in time, I would be hooked. (My first album was PR, and that's a whole different lifetime ago.)

I also started listening to Prince around 7 or 8 years old when I saw him on the Awards show playing purple rain. Been a fan ever since, its been like 20 years. Its great to see kids with genuine appreciation for music. You must be somewhat artistic correct? smile

This is incredible... I can't believe you heard TRC and went back for more. Mine is and will remain on the shelf, having been played through exactly twice.

But hey, to each their own, I think it's great that you were drawn in by it. One down, about 5 billion to go.

Well I thought I'd chime in here as well, so here it goes. My first Prince album which I heard when I was in 6th grade (now a sophomore in college) was The Gold Experience. His performance on the AMAs I believe, was great enough to get me to buy the album. After that I eventually bought every other album of his over a period of several years. One thing I love is the ability for me to go back and listen to an album or song which I had paid too much attention to earlier, and re-discover it, and maybe even find a song which I get temporarilly hooked on. For years I had thought that Parade was my least favorite album, but overtime I have begun to reconsider that thought due to my love for Anotherloverhoelyohead, Kiss, and my new love for Sometimes it Snows in April. Also, I have recently been listening a lot more to the 1999 and Drity Mind albums, and have realized that there really is no filler on those albums. I love or at least like every song on those two albums. As for The Rainbow Children I loved it from the first listen. I remember having trouble just getting through the school day because I was so excited to get back home to listen to The Everlasting Now and Last December. Of course the excitement has worn down now, but I still think its absolutely fantastic.
