List of other artists songs covered by Prince I'm trying to do a list of every song by other artists that Prince has referenced during his career. This includes songs he has covered live and in the studio, incuding unreleased. Also songs he has sampled, or recommended in print (such as 10,000 magazine or ONA booklet) or on the net through the news section on his site. Blue motel room (Joni Mitchell)
Really? When did he do this one? I love that song! Help me (Joni Mitchell)
You're referring to the Ballad of Dorothy Parker, no? Once in a lifetime (Talking heads)
THAT would be interesting... where and when? What did it sound like? Stronger than pride (Sade)
Wow, that would've been great. Sade is cool. Twisted (Annie Ross)
My analyst told me.. Sade - everything
Everything?

So when did he do "Let her down easy" (Terence Trent D'Arby)? I remember the 80s medley with "Wishing Well" and I also remember vaguely Prince doing a small part of "If You Let Me Stay" on one bootleg, but I never heard he did "Let her down easy" With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! When has Prince referenced 'everything' except one album, 'Dancing With The Lion', by Andreas Vollenwieder? As far as I am aware, the last reference made to Andreas Vollenweider was when an interviewer stated that they had seen the CD, 'Book Of Roses' in one of the studios at Paisley Park. I'm unaware of any reference any of the albums, post 'Book Of Roses', including the double live CD, 'Kryptos', 'Cosmopoly', and 'Eolian Minstrel'. . As far as Erykah Badu is concerned, Prince performed on guitar on 'Penitentiary Philosophy' at the second Celebration in 2001, and a snippet of Badu performing 'Cleva' from the same night at Paisley park was played on one of the 2001 NPGMC ahdio shows. If I recall correctly, a recommendation for Amel Larrieux's 'Infinite Possibilities' was posted one of the former websites pre-dating her performance at the second Celebration in 2001.

what a list what a work... thanks for that. I was thinking about "oye cómo va" song - he's played it several times. I don't know if the title is right or wrong - maybe it's already in your list under a different name.
once more. | |

He mentioned Wendy and Lisa's entire first album in one of his BedIScream emails that he was sending out in 1996 when Emancipation came out. And he also mentioned specifically Everything But You by Wendy and Lisa in the same email I believe.

The version of "Twisted" he likely referenced is the one recorded by Joni Mitchell on her Court and Spark album.

Ypu should highlight 'Passin' Her Name' by the Fonky Baldheads.
At the second Celebration concert during 2001 at the Excel Center, St Paul, the Fonky Baldheads did a short opening set. Prince came out and joined Kip Blackshire on vocals for this song. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Thanx for explaining (and for the nice list as well ) No, he did not do "If you let me stay", just that one line (or maybe just a part of that line). As far as I remember there was a thread on the Org quite some time ago discussing if Prince did that line of the song as an hommage for TTD or in order to ridicule him. I remember pulling out the CD it was on (sadly I don't remember which one it was at the moment, but I think some boxset with some Paisley Park gigs or aftershows) and it was very short, but kinda funny hearing Prince screaming "staaayyy") With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! Thanks for your input. I'm going to edit the list now with your suggestions. I want to try to make this the most complete list possible, as I've noticed that a list like this is not really available anywhere on the net, or in any of the Uptown books, apart from in one of the early magazines, and that one is way out of date.

I'm aware he has done "Villanova junction" I'm sure he's done a steve vai cover of "tender surrender" which sounds similar to villanova junction, u know what i'm talking about? i don't see "tender surrender" up there. Steve vai had said that he heard a bootleg of it and he gave one of his prised guitar possesions to prince for recognizing him. heres the guitar given to prince by steve vai: http://www.vai.com/Machin...ar036.html [This message was edited Sun Nov 2 10:40:08 PST 2003 by Jem] I remember that, but I got the impression when it was discussed here a while back that people generally thought it was just Villanove Junction. I've never heard Tender Surrender or the Prince version, so I can't really give an opinion, but I'll put it up there.

He didn't do "Let her down easy" live. It's one of the tracks listed as "Beautiful Music" in 10,000 magazine in 1994. He did "If you let me stay" though? Thanx for explaining (and for the nice list as well ) No, he did not do "If you let me stay", just that one line (or maybe just a part of that line). As far as I remember there was a thread on the Org quite some time ago discussing if Prince did that line of the song as an hommage for TTD or in order to ridicule him. I remember pulling out the CD it was on (sadly I don't remember which one it was at the moment, but I think some boxset with some Paisley Park gigs or aftershows) and it was very short, but kinda funny hearing Prince screaming "staaayyy") Well, I guess that still counts Cool And he also did the "River Kwai Marsch" back in 86 or 87 at some aftershow With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be!
