I imagine Wally wasn't that great.

Think about all the songs you heard of from that time period - before you heard them on bootleg, and what they sound like now.

Rebirth Of The Flesh, Crysal Ball, The Dream Factory - all fantastic songs - but they're not some missing link, the lost songs that would crown Prince as the most wonderful artist of all time.

They're just good Prince songs, but not really so much more than any of the official releases from their respective time periods.

I imagine Wally would be pretty much the same - not the Holy Grail, just another mid-80s out-take.

There's a great excerpt from Susan Rogers telling how this was THE song she always knew he was capable of and how she felt it was the best thing he had written. It allegedly starts with him having a conversation with Wally (Safford) about women/relationships, then uses a play on the words Malady and Melody. Malady being the french word for Pain (correct me if i'm wrong) and how Prince told Susan he thought it was interesting that it was so similar to the word Melody. It was just very stripped down and extremely intimate but Prince began to add more and more stuff to it, which according to Susan Rogers, was making it sound worse...until she began to realize that he was intentionally destroying it. Finally Prince told her to erase the whole thing to which she refused and then he went over and erased it himself.

I truly do believe Susan's description and love of the song is genuine. She seems the type (from all the interviews i've read) to not mince her words. If it was a crappy song she would have definitely said so (there's a funny story about "Adonis & Bathsheeba" along those lines).

It's a damn shame we'll NEVER hear it.
