Prince and France: The hidden truth behind Prince's decline

Back in 1986-98, Prince seemed to hold France as his second home country: (i) he shot UTCM in Nice (I remember this MTV interview at the time of UTCM's opening, during which he described this movie as a "French movie...A black and white French movie"); (ii) he bought a flat Avenue Foche; (iii) opened the Lovesexy World Tour in Paris; (iv) he recorded "It's gonna be a beautiful night" in Paris, Le Zenith; (v) he offered us amazing aftershows (New Morning in 86 and 87 in particular); and (vi) he made multiple references to France in his songs (Condition of the Heart, Do You Lie, Alexa de Paris, Girls and Boys, Sexy MF...). And then, slowly but surely, this (mutual) passion faded away. Things started to go wrong probably with the awful Nude Tour concert at Le Parc des Princes in June-July 1990 (one of Prince's worst performances ever)...

To make a long story short, I'm not saying that Prince's musical decline (let's face it folks, his post-Lovesexy material is really weaker than the rest) is in any way linked to that, but still, it seems that Prince's most prolific and exciting period (circa 1985-1988) is somehow linked to Paris, if only on a symbolical level. And boy do I miss that.

(For those of you who haven't figured that out yet, I'm French tease! And yes, I'm quite nostalgic...)

Very cool nod I'm not very familiar with the Nude tour in 1990 @ Le Parc des Princes. What all went on?

Basically, Prince's equipment arrived in very late, they did a minimum soundcheck, the sound was awful, and the audience not responsive at all (Prince even said something like: "If you don't make an effort, I won't make one and just quit"). Very bad memories of this concert.

I was at that gig (Paris) and at the end, the last line of Partyman was repeated with "Yeah, this town really needs an enema

Saying that, I only ever listen to Radio Nova and I'm always hearing some great Prince tracks (and NOT JUST Parade stuff either wink ). They've played some Rainbow Children in the past...pretty cool!
