Well since you work with them your opinion is going to bias.

Thats a very biased statement itself. I happen to work with Mandrill BECAUSE of what they stand for and BECAUSE of their musical impact, brilliance and diversity. I was fully aware of this BEFORE I decided to work with them and bring them over to Europe.

Where did Mandrill perform at in D.C?. There are areas of the city I am not going to be caught did in at night.

Not D.C., but Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore etc. Its not exactly your town, but not out of your range. I have traveled more for music.

The previous poster implied that Mandrill's music was to complex for the average listener. I do not understand why any artist would want to make his or her music so complex that average fan could'nt get into it. There a funk band people should be able to dance to their music.

I think you have misread the pervious poster`s post. He did not consider complex music as negative, that was your implication.
Why would an artist make his music complex? Well, maybe because he LOVES to play. Why is there Bebop? Its a highly complex music. Prince has written very complex pieces as well, i.e. Chrystal Ball or many tunes on TRC. If people chose to dance to it, they still can. People dance at Mandrill shows, I can assure you that the audience is going nuts.

Look up the definition for opinion. Everybody has one and because you do not agree does not make my opinion wrong.

Again, we are not talking about opinions. We are talking about clear definition. Not everything is life is relative.

I never said I did not like the group just said I do not think they are that great. I may have listened to their cd five or six times since I purchased it and I only got it because of "Fencewalk" but at the same time I would not sell it. They are just o.k to me.

I respect your opinion, I would never force you to like them. Thats quite alright with me. But this debate was not about your or my taste for music, it was about the impact, diversity and creative innovation of a group.

---
I do not think you respect my opinion has you called it ignorant. The bottom line is I think Mandrill is alright. I have never seen them in concert and perhaps the music comes over better in a concert environment. We are can agree to disagree.

By comparing the mastery of Duke Ellington to Prince`s poppy adventures, weak jazz attempts and sad orchestral wanna-bes, you are shitting on the grave of the great Ellington. rolleyes

I wouldn't go that far. They are doing different things. I am sure some classical heads would say comparing Ellington to, say, Mozart, is doing the same thing. Which is wrong, of course.

Miles himself called Prince "the Ellington of his day." In many respects, what they do is different. But in contemporary popular/soul music, Prince should have the same stature as Ellington does in jazz.

I am responsible for the start of this messy thread. Now lets let the topic die. Die Prince thread die. Way too many people looking in and way too off topic mostly. Die Prince thread before topic rating dwindles to 1 and 2000 people are exposed to this mess.

Gosh, Prince fans certainly know how to fight! Being prolific is not a subjective thing. It's based on sheer quantity- that can't be argued. As for whether it is good in some cases, that is what is open to debate.

Personally, give me a good drum machine and some synths with a funky bass and I'm happy, but that's just me. I won't begin to pretend that my taste is how everyone should function.

This is just my opinion, but I have yet to see anyone who can compare with Prince. Pure genious. The only artist that can match Prince's genius in my opinion would be David Bowie, but I beleive Prince has a much bigger amount of incredible peices than D.B.

The thought that some people compare Neil Yougn with Prince is a joke to me.

Well as im with u to say that Prince is genius in his music, I do believe there are many who are as prolific.. I would just say, equally as prolific as prince.. Im not puttin each artist on a scale and saying thats that, I would just categorize them as a group on the achievments and songwriting quanity and quality. smile

Here's My Two Cents & 99.9% of ya'll haven't even heard of him - DAVID GARZA!
Before he was even signed to Atlantic it was said he amassed over 20 albums worth of material. A pure musical genius in his own right. Master on the guitar, killer on the piano & if you see him solo he'll switch from one instrument to the other after every other song. The last time I saw him here in SF he alternated between the piano & The Fucking Lute if you can believe that. Do you know how hard it is to play one of those? And yes there is a prince connection, he played on a compilation called - Austin Does Prince smile Anyhoo check him out. These albums in order of accessibility to those not indoctrinated

1.This Euphoria
2.Overdub - which has alternate trax of every song via your pc
3.Kingdom Come & Go - mostly acoustic cd

He's now doing his "own" thing check him out on - davidgarza.com

Don't sweat it man. Folks is talking about music, not Brittney's lesbo lip tugs with her grandmother.
