Emancipation is a difficult album for me to listen to in the first place, particularly Disc II - the outrageous schlock in that video doesn't help matters any. Plus I hated Prince's anorak...and wasn't he pumping gas at the beginning of the video? I know he's been spotted pumping his own gas in MPLS in recent months, but back then...puh-LEEZE!!! | |

It's unlistenable because he was so happy during the recording of what he believed at the time was his greatest work, with all this new-found freedom, and then things ended up such a tragedy. He has poured too much of himself into it, bared his soul. It's awful in hindsight. I guess if things had worked out really well with everything, we'd probably be hearing much more of this! | |

The video was supposedly made after Mayte and Prince's baby had died. It makes no sense. So for me, the video is kinda sick. (And that I never could stand the syrupy song to begin with doesn't improve matters.) I think we can assume that wasn't the case. As for the song and the vid... yeah it is very saccharine and syrupy but I think he pulls it off. It's a decent cover of a classic lurve song, with his falsetto stronger than ever... and the cheesy vid seems quite innocent and harmless (he was pretty happy at that time, I guess, judging from the content of the album). I don't hate it. But then, Emancipation is one of my favourite Prince albums. Sure it was overproduced, but it was eclectic, interesting, indulgent, and the joyous vibe is infectious. | |

But, you know... Even after the death of their baby, Prince and Mayte kept on the pretense of being a happy family. At the Emancipation release party at Paisley Park, Prince told the journalists - when asked about Mayte - that she was with their baby. Apparently, Prince was so intent on promoting Emancipation as the product of a happy family man, that he decided to go through with promoting himself with this "family man image" despite the baby's tragic death. You must admit that whole thing was quite weird. But I guess he was so outta his mind with grief, one cannot really blame him for being a bit outta his mind at the time. You know, I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope he has the opportunity to have another baby and that everything works out well.
What happened to him and mayte is probably the worst thing that can possibly happen, hardly any marriages survive tragedies like this, people grieve too differently and in opposite directions. I hope he does get to experience the other end of the spectrum too, he seems SO in love at the moment, it's only a matter of time! It will really bring him back to earth. | |

That's weird, the whole thing is too weird. I don't understand it at all. Writing a song/letter would make more sense than letter dancers in the video, it would tell a sad story instead of a whacked one. | |

The One video is rare because I dont believe it ever saw the light of day. Prince had a party at Paisley Park one Friday night to premier it but I never saw or heard of it after that.Prince pumps his own damn gas yall.He also goes to the HOLLYWOOD video store as they are about to close or right after they close to choose his videos. He hasn't been spotted eating at too many restaurants lately from what I have seen.The last time i saw him was at Jazzmines jazz club in Mpls. eating French Fries while watching Kip Blackshires performance.http://www.kipblackshire.com | |
