Look at it in a bookstore - DO NOT BUY THIS SEMI-LITERATE TRASH! It really is a travesty in so many departments.

Princer`s life is spectacular. You are whining about this book, but you have nothing to hold against it, and you still make a lot of noise.

What do I have to hold against this book? 1/ That the writer was promoting it as something it wasn't - a good book! 2/ It was published in hardcover, when it didn't deserve to be published at all! 3/ It cost £17 - a bit steep for shit on stilts (nice cover design though), 4/ The notion that a 'writer' can compile a critical book of someone he doesn't know, but should be above criticism by the book's readers is just plain stupid, 5/ The author has an obvious agenda from page one. And when that agenda isn't at all borne of the kindest intentions, then I reserve the right to be even more critical than I otherwise might have been Especially when he makes a complete arse of it.

soulpower said:

As a journalist myself, I think its an okay-book. Its not the best biography I have ever written

Right, firstly being a journalist yourself means nothing. That's the same as saying you can be a food critic because you work at Burger King. However your comment that Its not the best biography I have ever written makes me ask if you are Mr Hahn yourself, although I'll assume that was probably just a mistake.

soulpower said:

... for people to whom Prince is the main focus in their lives (which is sad in itself) I understand that this book is a painful read.

I haven't read all the comments about the book, but most of the pain comes from how pitiful the book is for a professional release, and nothing to do with the revelations contained therein. There is very little that is actually new anyway! Even the most devoted Prince lover out there has to concede that he's often treated people with less respect than they deserved.

soulpower said:

So get over it dude. Or at least put some proof on the table that the book is full of lies.

If you read what I said about the book, I wasn't attacking Hahn for printing lies, or for writing negatively about Prince - I don't know where you've for that from!. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve criticism for these things, but I haven't gone down that road. He's made an easy enough target of himself without me having to bother with the personal stuff!

I was attacking him for being an appalling writer, who makes more errors than I've seen in any published book, and repeats himself endlessly. The book should never have been released in the state it was in! The fact that he has motives other than expressing himself as a Prince fan, makes him an easy figure to attack.

Hahn's editors and publishers also deserve much blame for being completely unprofessional. It's hard to believe Hahn even redrafted it, but to think that an 'eagle-eyed' editor had gone over this stuff without spotting all the daft mistakes (and you don't have to know ANYTHING about Prince to see them) is almost beyond belief!

And here are the original News item links from the month the book was released. It's all in there...

This is all subjective. There is no reason that this book shouldnt be published just because YOU dont like it. There is many readers who in fact DO appreciate it.

Right, firstly being a journalist yourself means nothing. That's the same as saying you can be a food critic because you work at Burger King. However your comment that Its not the best biography I have ever written makes me ask if you are Mr Hahn yourself, although I'll assume that was probably just a mistake.

Yes, it was a spelling mistake, I meant to say its not the best biography I ever read. Being a professional journalist means something when you have a degree, two years training and you haven been contracted by major publications. I at least can judge this book for its journalistic value. Its not perfect, but he did a lot of research and its an OK book.

Yeah, but the book offers many examples. I believe that I know a lot about Prince, and although I didnt pay much attention to him between 1993 - 2001, I used to. I have worked for Uptown mag and contributed to Per Nilsen`s first biography, but I still found lots of new stories in Alex`s publication.
And you still call the book "unprofessional", but you have nothing to prove this, only your opinion. Thats not enough.

So what is your problem then? You call the book unprofessional, but you cant truly explain why. You dont accuse the author of lying. What is it then? Do you simply not like your idol`s reputation damaged?

I was attacking him for being an appalling writer, who makes more errors than I've seen in any published book, and repeats himself endlessly.

Which errors?

The book should never have been released in the state it was in! The fact that he has motives other than expressing himself as a Prince fan, makes him an easy figure to attack.

Everybody who writes a biography has personal motives, may they be good or bad.

Please, I would like to see examples.

soulpower - stop going on about 'who you know' and your 'qualifications' - everything I think that was awful about Hahn's authorship is explained in full in the links provided. If you don't think that is a 'full explanation' of why I consider it unprofessional then I really don't know what it would take!

I'm not going to talk you through the two larger posts paragraph by paragraph. Incidentally, most of what I wrote isn't opinion - it's fact! When it comes to pointing out errors or inadequacies (as opposed to, say, wishing he'd spent more time on the Parade album or whatever) it leaves the realm of opinion.

Because a book isn't filled with lies doesn't make it 'good' or beyond criticism.

Having a degree or having been commissioned to write articles isn't big or clever (and both probably apply to a great many more people on here than you think). Mentioning it to add weight to your argument is just desperate.

Whatever dude. I see that now you are trying to make a personal case against me as well -- its all a little bit too personal in my opinion. And if its not clever to be a professional journalist -- why do you read newspaper then? Listen, if even a journalist isnt qualified to judge the journalistic content of a book, what makes you think that YOU are qualified?? lol Seems like that only your opinion is valid in your eyes, and instead of keeping the debate moderate you are getting personal. Stop being ding dongish..its been explained before when u were acting up in P&R forums many moons ago...now that you are here ( oh..yay...) we gotta do it again so here goes..listen good:

it isn't tacky because it isn't a smooch fest--its tacky because there is bias involved, agendas, Hahn has a dual relationship-a conflict of interest as someone who represented someone against Prince in court..that alone , without even mentioning focusing largely, mainly, wholeheartedly on the negative aspects of one person makes it a dubious writing. I thought you were supposed to be smart.

I am smart enuff to understand that, thanks for your concern. But like I have said before, every author of a biography is biased. The reason for the bias can be either negative or a positive one, like a big fan who decides to write a book on his idol. Its okay to be biased, as long as you still deliver the full story. Hahn did that, at least with all the information that was availbale to him. I agree that sometimes his reviews of albums was a little bit too biased though.

No not every author is bised negatively or positively..and for the record I would scoff at any overtly positive account just as well. But as long as one recognizes there is a bias and takes that into account then at least they have a more educated stance already going in knowing not to believe everything they read etc. And Hahn did NOT deliver the full story..the "considering what was avbailable to him" as in these "hushed sources" is not a full story by any means. Anyone who believes Possessed is a full story is a fucking idiot and a damn fool.

Like I said before.

I dont think thats true. I mean, give me one part of the book where Hahn claims that Prince is not a master musician. Its obvious that Hahn wants to destroy the Prince myth -- kinda the one I have jokingly mentioned above. Ya know, perfect, no drugs, humble to the women he loves, easy to get along with, righteous, etc... Too many fans believe the myth Prince has created for himself, and Hahn simply points out that that myth is not reality, but he did so without destroying Prince`s genius as a musician.

Who believed the myth past 1984? Gullible folks probably..plus nobody really gave a damn because nobody knew the inner workings of Prince Company etc...plus Im not talking about the myth of being a master musician..Im talking his slanted view on Prince the person..he paints Prince to be this devil..nobody is constantly bad all the time..wheres the good parts of Prince's personality that attracts these folks to him anyways etc? huh? the secret charities, philanthropistic attributes etc? Effa musican myth..this is aall out assault on a "person"..period..and this has been talked and argued about months ago...you're late

Back up your points regarding the book, or take me to task about mine. You aren't doing either, you're just giving me a half baked resume, time after time. Oh, and you're saying I haven't proved anything (which seems ridiculous if you've read my posts on the subject).

soulpower said:

Of course not. But its seems to me that you are dissin it because you didnt like what you had to read about Prince.

Why does it seem like that to you? Why oh why? Give me an example of what gave you that impression? That is your own prejudice about why someone doesn't like the book, and nothing to do with what I've said on the matter - which all relates to how horribly written and thought out it is.

When I took it back to the shop I showed the guy behind the counter a couple of 'choice' phrases and repetitions. Even he couldn't believe his eyes, chuckled, and gave me an immediate refund.

soulpower said:

And if its not clever to be a professional journalist -- why do you read newspaper then? Listen, if even a journalist isnt qualified to judge the journalistic content of a book, what makes you think that YOU are qualified??

You're making it personal by telling me about yourself, post-in post-out, without addressing anything I've said about the book. Can't you see why that would be tiresome and I'd ask you to stop? Qualification is in the reading, and being able to convey that in whatever form. I don't read a newspaper to see who is cleverer than I am - I probably want to see the news! It seems you feel the need to 'qualify' yourself before putting up the opinions of a 'journalist' - erm, 'I think it's an okay-book' - the sole appraisal you have given it in this thread! Hardly The New York Times, is it?

soulpower said:

I'm telling you to stop making it personal - just try putting forth an argument and stop trying to justify your own opinion based on who you know (no good to me anyway, as this is part of your presumption that I think the book is full of lies) and what you do. Deal with the numerous points I've raised on the book if you wish. Instead you are attacking a 'slant' on the book that I haven't actually presented. Sheesh!

If you're going to respond again please deal with the points I've made on Possessed!

OK, so Hahn's writin style is a little "unique" at best and the editing is amateurish to say the least. However does that give any of us the right to state "DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK" ?

Surely if people are that concerned, they could go to their local bookstore, have a preview read, and then buy it if they want to.

The judgmental stance used by people on both sides of this argument is astounding.

Look - some people agree with the book, some people dissagree. Some people like the repetitive style that Alex has used, some don't. Why don't you all just agree to dissagree and respect peoples opinons ?

Who said dont buy the book? I sure as hell didnt so get your facts straight..dont be like Hahn..get em straight. I could give two bits if someone buys it or doesnt but I will respond to what I feel is shoddy writing etc and shoddy journalism..and respect? I respect anyones opinions whether they like it or not but I will speak on it and from me the source..not "some source not to be named"...respect?I can respect people being wrong.

RD - My facts are straight, please check back the posts in this thread as I can quote from a post above (not yours by the way)...

"Alex Hahn's picture can be seen on the inside cover of his *cough* book's dustjacket. Look at it in a bookstore - DO NOT BUY THIS SEMI-LITERATE TRASH! It really is a travesty in so many departments"

Not sure why you took this so personal ?

Ha! Now that's nerve..this whole book "project" was personal LOL! Besides Gavin, you may be biased-conflict of interest in this since you are connected with Uptown, so...

erm - I had nothing to do with Alex's book. The point I was making was regarding your false assumption that I was alleging that YOU made the comment "DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK".

you can get counselling for paranoia you know biggrin

OK, so Hahn's writin style is a little "unique" at best and the editing is amateurish to say the least. However does that give any of us the right to state "DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK" ?

Firstly, I think it's worrying that even the pro-Hahn camp seem to admit that it's very poorly written. As editing is merely a task of fixing errors, etc, 'bad' editing is just as much a reflection of the original writer as the editor. It's shocking that the editor missed all those errors, etc, but even more shocking that Hahn presented such a manuscript with a straight face!

And 'unique' IS another way of saying 'awful' in this case.

As for his style... he doesn't have any. His repetitions (especially when he announces he doesn't want to be duplicative!) aren't style, they're just plain bad writing. And NOT because he is writing for a non-Prince fan who doesn't know who Susannah Melvoin is. If that was the case he wouldn't have assumed the reader knew just what an 'Aftershow' was.

People can say what they like, if they can justify why...

Don't vote for Bush
Don't eat the tuna fish
Don't join the NPGMC
Don't Buy Alex Hahn's book because it is piss poor!

It's all the same thing. Why everyone assumes that being anti-Hahn is anything to do with his stance on Prince doesn't hold water. The other arguments against why he was ever published are overwhelming.

Surely if people are that concerned, they could go to their local bookstore, have a preview read, and then buy it if they want to.

I said that much already... you even quoted me on it!

"Pro-Hahn camp" ?

Just becuase I work with Uptown and am thankful for the hard-work that Alex put into keeping the magazine alive, that doesn't mean that I'm "pro" his book does it ?

The point I was making was about everyone's opinions on the subject. I even looked back at your original post that freakyfeet linked back to and thought it was a well written, well thought out piece.

What I found amusing was rdhull's blatant paranoia that I was acusing him of something.

There is enuff of them here... I know you are not, but they are here and they are many... lol

This "may" true to some extent but it still doesnt excuse Hahn and his writing.

It's amazing that you can keep up a crack habit and still post..bravo smile. I "know" you weren't referring to me about the "dont buy this book" comment, but I (can) still commented on it because it was still relevant to the conversation whether it pertained to me or not. Hello! McFly! And you may not have anything to do with Hahns book but you are a part of Uptown, which was represented by Hahn. Paranoia my ass.

shut up

there is a lot of good in Prince that has been obvious and not so obvious but that is never touched upon

The only person that believed any myths about Prince were people like Soulpower. He thinks Prince fans need Alex Hahn to dispel myths.Well we don't need Mr.Hahn to anything of the sort.
