After so looking forward to the prospect the album disappointed so much, and apart from the odd good trax here & there P has never released a consitently good album since Lovesexy imho.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still a big fan, and collect everything & I'll be at all the gigs, but I got into Prince around the time of Controversy, and all his pre-90s albums just go from strength to strength & I still listen to them ALL regularly. Don't think Batman's been on my hi fi for a few years now, yet one of my fave b sides was from this era (I love u in Me).
Before you start dissing me it's only an opinion.

chill bro, u entitled 2 ur opinion !i am not 1 the mad squad on here who think only there opinion counts and if u dont agree u can f**k off.

batman was a pre 90's album though ? but u dont have 2 like it !

cool

I just about wore out my tape of "Batman" back in the summer of '89. The only song I could have done without was "Lemon Crush".

Yeah, I remember the story of how Prince came up with the tracks for the album in two weeks or whatever. I'm thinking he probably already had most of these tracks around and just changed a few little things here and there to fit the characters into them. Wasn't "Partyman" made for the scene in UTCM that eventually used "Girls and Boys" instead? Just an example of pre-existing tracks waiting to be used for the Batman project.

Blurgh! I don't Lemon Crush either. I see a lot of people on here love it though, and Batdance gets trashed, but I think it's a stroke of genius.

The story about Partyman in the scene of Girls & Boys in UTCM - I read that too somewhere a long time ago, it stuck in my mind, but I've never seen anything about that since.

Could anyone (Boris) confirm this is correct or not, was Partman recorded for the Batman sessions, or earlier?

On a similar note, Electric Chair was from '88, Scandalous was written on the Lovesexy tour (right?), and Vicki Waiting was originally 'Anna Waiting' - so that's 3 songs there that he dug out for the project, besides Rave and 19.

Still on the theme of older songs being dug up for future projects, I remember in an issue of Uptown years ago reading a readers letter asking if 319 was from that era - something about Cat hearing The Gold Experience and saying she remembered 319 from her days with P.

If you listen to 319 the synth horns are very reminiscent of that era.

Again, we await our Supreme Grand Dragon of Knowledge, Borisfishpaw for clarification on these matters biggrin

"Lemon Crush" was also supposedly written for Anna Fantastic. The story goes that Lemon Crush was her favorite drink and he wrote that and "Anna Waiting" for her. Then when Warners wanted songs for the Batman project, he changed them a bit to fit the theme.

Cool.

So really he only wrote half the tracks and updated/dug out a few others in that short period.

Moonbeam

I like it, but there are a few weak tracks there for me. It's still got a lot of great ones, though.
