oh, i got a live 1 here !.......BATMAN

firstly i'd like 2 say i was a batman fan long b4 i got in2 p.so i am probably biased here !, i,d like your thoughts on the batman album ? pls.(i loved it!)

going from memory i was real xcited bout p doin the soundtrack. i remember reading jack nicholson was on the set and it was he who suggested p 4 the s/t, as he thought p's music was ideal 4 the movie.they supposedly had p over 2 the set and played 1999 and baby i'm a star as the background noise. p was impressed and took on the job of doin all new music 4 the movie !,nicholson was supposedly a big p fan.

p duly delivered 11 tracks 2 warners in 10 days !!!
the future
electric chair
the arms of orion
partyman
vivki waiting
trust
lemon crush
scandalous
batdance
200 balloons
rave un2 the joy fantastic

warners rejected 200 balloons and rave, rave never saw the light of day until a couple of years ago !, and 200 balloons became the b side of batdance.wotabout the video 4 batdance ? vicki vale , vicki vale !!

i remember i loved the album immedietly, i was a p fan, a batman fan , a jack nicholson fan , and who didnt love kim basinger back then ??? "HELLO LEGS"

it was a dream 4 me 2 hear p singing

"all is well in GOTHAM CITY the sound of terror is all u hear"

i also remember reading a review which was very deep xplaining how p had a split personality "gemini" , and he used this as inspiration when writing bout batman and the joker, its pretty obvious when u listen 2 the album, sometimes its a quadrophonic personality batman, b wayne, vicki vale and the partyman himself joker !

"well miss vale, did u know prince wrote the soundtrack 2 BATMAN in 10 days ?"

comments please !

I remember the NME(?) stating in big letters in it's review of Batman:

PRINCE IS DEAD DEAD DEAD!

I remmeber KLOS a aor rock station actually played Batdance once and one time only but still..so did KROQ, a then new wave alternative staple (still is)...

I remmeber th e single being out before the album and an aqauintance ata friends house stating the bsdie is 200 Ballons (which I played and immediately hated).

Vicky Waiting is th e jam

The Future was a perfect set up for a bleak theme of Batman.

I was Gemini for a Halloween party that fall ...fell in love with Partyman 12 inch version

Well I gotta say Vicki Waiting is the only reason I even pick this album out to listen to! When Prince sings in the background "This Is Where She Wants 2 Be", that line right there gets me every time! Great song, take out the Gotham City part and it could have been placed on any album!

yeah, a popular line for the interviewers to throw in that one

personally i love the batman album, it was the second prince album i heard after purple rain and when i got into it i listened to it twice through and then again at night every day for about a week. at night id just stick on my headphones and marvel at the little sounds and effects on there, brilliant.

now i play it, i think perhaps lemon crush sticks out abit negatively for some reason. i like it though, but i dont know, after trust i dont love lemon crush but i love scandalous so maybe thats why!

whatever, its a great album IMO. and the fact he recorded it in 10 days is unbelievable

I just about wore out my tape of "Batman" back in the summer of '89. The only song I could have done without was "Lemon Crush".

Yeah, I remember the story of how Prince came up with the tracks for the album in two weeks or whatever. I'm thinking he probably already had most of these tracks around and just changed a few little things here and there to fit the characters into them. Wasn't "Partyman" made for the scene in UTCM that eventually used "Girls and Boys" instead? Just an example of pre-existing tracks waiting to be used for the Batman project.

It's cool. Electric Chair was a killer joint as well. I admit that Lemon Crush does nothing for me lyrically but the groove is tight and the vocal harmonies are sensational.

Batman was good... but the remixes by the S-Express guy were fantastic, specifically "The Future" and of course "Batman"

What I love about this album is that it's so simple and uncontrived and fun and relaxed. What I hate about is is the fact that I haven't been able to get Arms of Orion out of my head for the last 56 hours!

After so looking forward to the prospect the album disappointed so much, and apart from the odd good trax here & there P has never released a consitently good album since Lovesexy imho.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still a big fan, and collect everything & I'll be at all the gigs, but I got into Prince around the time of Controversy, and all his pre-90s albums just go from strength to strength & I still listen to them ALL regularly. Don't think Batman's been on my hi fi for a few years now, yet one of my fave b sides was from this era (I love u in Me).
Before you start dissing me it's only an opinion.
