is prince still able to write a killer single? it has now been a number of years since prince has written a killer track. im not talking about a good quality song, he is still more than capable of that. im talking about a killer single which is commercially strong.
in the eighties and early nineties, prince could write these songs for fun...1999...when doves cry...cream..litte red corvette. i personally think the last great single prince wrote was gold, his last top ten hit in the uk in 1995. since then he has released strong albums like the rainbow children but no real killer tracks like the ones i have mentioned. i thought most of the music released through the npgmusicclub has not been up to his past releases so the question is...is prince still capable of writing another strong single?

I think so. He's had quite a few that made great singles.
Come On Don't Play Me The One Greatest Romance Supercute U Make My Sunshine She Loves Me 4 Me Face Down The Holy River He's just out of step with the mainstream so it's getting harder and harder for him to get noticed.

Yes, look out for Life O the Party...it's new and he's been playing it on tour. It's catchy and goes down a treat.

I don't think so, because to write a killer single is not only about composing music.
I mean, if Prince wanted to have a new numer 1 single, he needs 1st to write somthing commercial (but all, lyrics and music) and he needs to sell it (=promoting the song in MTV, to sing a deal with an important record company), etc. And I think it's difficult. In my opinion, the only way is like Santana, Supernatural.

True true...but let's not forget that there's a huge difference between a 'Hit Pop Single' and a great song. There's tons of junk topping the Billboard charts. No disrespect current producers and artists that are writing these songs, I know they work very hard. But as weird as it sounds...'the music industry has strayed for away from its focus', which was once (1)Music, (2)Musicianship, and (3)Artistry.
I'm not convinced anymore, that you have to be talented to get a record deal and go platinum. The industry is so powerful, it can take some one with little potential, teach them how to sing, how to dance and perform, invest $millions$ into videos and producers. And there you go, your generically bred Pop-Star. Yet when you listen to their music, you can hear the lack of authenticity. Artists like Prince, Stevie Wonder and others, I continue to adore, because they represent a time where music was real. Blue "Come on out here Rhonda" Blue

With X amount of songs in his vault, he could if he really wanted to. I don't think it's his focus. I remember reading that someone at Warner mouthed off something to the affect of him no longer being able to write a hit single. He got wind of it and soon released The Most Beautiful Girl on Bellmark/NPG. He proved them wrong and of course they changed their tune. It was too late though as this was his first taste of freedom. He still has it in him, but I think it is unlikely he will go there. He seems bored with simple, solid catchy tunes and his mind and soul are in other musical areas now...unfortunately

Prince is capable of writing a killer single, but he's been there;done that. Because of the current trends and state of the music industry I doubt very much that the "experts" could "hear" it or recognize it anyway.
I liked what TheBluePrince wrote.

Lets face it... Only Viacom makes a single a killer single.

I don't know about the single being killer & all. I mean, how's he gonna top Purple Rain?
OK, yeah, I'm being a bit of a hardass about this, but Purple Rain was just too damn perfect. That's a tough act to follow if you ask me. Even SOTT & the accompanying singles couldn't touch that. But I'm pretty sure he wants to write what's in his heart. It would be unlike him to write something for the sake of just creating a hit. Na' mean? NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

A recent article being circulated stated that Prince said that now he has everything that he wants.
If this is true, then for me that explains a lot. Because that says to me that he is living a satisfied life. Without desire or a longing for something, the zest and spontaneity would disappear from any conquest or adventure. Earlier in his career Prince took his musical style to the extreme with daring lyrics and displays. Now he is at the other end of the spectrum living with rigid rules and regulations which restrict his creativity. Prince wrote the killer singles when he was living in a time when he didn't have everything that he wanted. He had hopes and dreams of how things could be and they fired his passion. Along with his imagination, that passion materialized into a free flowing force with an urgent message that became the music. IMO

Exactly.Prince could go into the studio today and write a whole new album of catchy,radio-friendly songs. But as an independent artist,it would be hard for him to release singles, videos, etc, without a major record company behind him.
