i'll give you all the reasons why rainbow children is better then lovesexy and sign o the times there are a fair amount of people
here on prince org. that still think how , the best prince albums are lovesexy and sign o the times. well that's not true, rainbow children is the best . 1)all guitar solos on sign o the times(with an exception of "i could never take the place" ) and lovesexy(with exception of anna stasia) are improvised. on the rainbow children album all guitar solos (except family name ending solo) are thematic guitar solos with begging, middle end end. 2)all the songs on sign o the times and lovesexy(except dance on) have standard 4/4 time beat. rainbow children have variations in the rhytmic depatment, take everywhere as an example. 3)some of the songs on sign o the times and lovesexy sound outdated because of the drumm programing, while rainbow children cd will 4ever sound fresh and worm. 4)many of the songs on sign o the times and lovesexy have simple chord proggresion, with only 2 chords(the cross) or 3 or 4 chords(lie anna stasia,i could never take the place of your man.) and chord progresion , is predictable on most the songs, while they arrangmants make 'em work of genios. but on the other side, rainbow children cd contain songs with unpredictable chord progression and you never know what next will happen' on those songs. also he used many unis lines(when all the instruments play the same line.)examples are family name, last december, the work. some people here complain about wedding feast.that songwas meant to be only a joke. for me starfish and coffie is children song. so those are the facts, rainbow children is musicly the best prince album the one real musician fans of prince always wanted and belived that prince could make. amen

yeah, if you break it down, "musically" it can be said it's his best.
HOWEVER, there are some that simply prefer SOTT and/or Lovesexy to TRC. But if you like TRC better, cool. It's all opinion. ~KiKi

Sometimes simplicity and minimalism is what it's all about. TRC is a good album, but I wouldn't rank it among Prince's top 10.

trc and lovesexy are my favorites; i love them equally. parade comes in at a very close 2nd place. i understand what you're saying, banishedone, but you can't really tell people that what they think is wrong. its all subjective. i think lovesexy was a very experimental album. to this day, there is nothing else that sounds like it. the same can be said of trc. does that make a 'best' album? to some, yes...but not to all.
i do love your passion for the recording, though!

i do love your passion for the recording, though! what i think is amazing about prince is the fact that he takes something simple and done before, ie an A chord and an E chord, and turns it into something that makes shivers run over your body and tears prick your eyes!like the cross, or forever in my life, simple song but fucking amazing, though the backing vox on that is out of the normal span!! the fact he improved the solos on sign and lovesexy blows me away though, i love the guitar on lovesexy!

Why compare?!!
SOTT and LOVESEXY is where P was then... TRC is were P is now... Though most will regard SOTT as his masterpiece (as do I)...TRC is a masterpiece in itself...it's all about the music...more so than ever before! Put SOTT and TRC together in random rotation and you are really in for a treat! Every minute of last night is on my face today....

I love TRC, and as I said in other threads, I adore the new directions in music. I think Prince is a better musician now, he plays better and composes better.
But what about inspiration? Maybe "Sign O' The times" was easier to play, but you can find there a lot of incredible tunes, a lot of very inspired lyrics, a good performance. TRC is all about the same (in the lyrics part), and the tunes are good but if we compare the studio version of "The everlasting now" doesn't give us anything new that we didn't see in "U got the look", for e.g. Or what about "She loves me for me"? It'a pop ballad, but not like "i could never take the place of your man". I prefer "sign o the times" more than "mellow mellow", or "the ballad of Dorothy Parker" more than "muse 2 the paraoh", or "strange relationship" more than "the work", or "if i was your girlfriend" more than "everywhere"... I think that then Prince was a better "tuner" and he composed cooler songs. But it's true he is now a better musician and I love to see him looking for something new, and of course PLAYING JAZZZ!!!

I agree with you. I listen "SOTT" every time I can, and I don't do the same with TRC, but I like it.

I agree, Like LoveBizarre, that it's his best 'Musical' album. I may like a few others better, like SOTT. Yet like we all know, it's hard to pick our favorite Prince album or song (so many treats to pick from ) TRC is my favorite album as far as strictly the music, but N.E.W.S. is surely etching it's niche in that category as well. <--- Yeah I said it!

SOTT and Lovesexy have more personality and mystery than TRC. Like others said, I listen to SOTT and Lovesexy all the time, but I rarely listen to TRC. It just doesn't have that same exciting feel when you listen to it. __________________________________________________

Truly all stand alone albums that represented what they did 4 there respected eras. 2 compare is 2 lose all sight~
different times and frame of minds...experiences inspirations, ideas. Not 2 leave what he felt from deep within his spirit... All that stuff is 4 the critics, who missed the boat along time ago. Who R we 2 compare another mans art?

I'll give you one reason TRC can't touch SOTT or Lovsexy.

I've listened to TRC maybe 5 times since getting it. I've really tried to get it to grow on me, but I just can't do it. It was much easier with previous recordings. Heck, even NPS grew on me for a little while! NCC2012... your local Trekkie. =/\=

Starfish & Coffee is beautiful in it's simplicity, which makes it child like, not childish! Are you saying that REAL MUSICIAN FANS believe that Prince had not done enough until TRC was released, please! Also, think about the time that has passed since the release of Lovesexy/SOTT & TRC, really think! [This message was edited Sat Oct 25 17:40:23 PDT 2003 by jolajeph]

Sign O' The Times was a safe album of nice pop songs. I loved it 8 years ago but now I have an appreciation for good musicianship. I still like SOTT but I only listen to it every once in a while.
It's funny some are comparing TRC to SOTT and Lovesexy, neither of which are favorites of mine. It just goes to show that everybody has their own tastes-- that's a good thing.

Great breakdown, thebanishedone.
I guess this pretty well illustrates the underlying dichotomy between the Prince of yesteryear and the Prince of today: The former was a spontaneous creative rogue; the latter is a measured, thinking composer. I totally appreciate the merits of sophisticated arrangements and I respect where Prince has arrived, but sometimes sheer funk, instinct and ethos are more effective, I think. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
