COME / New Power Soul -- both underrated!!!

Last night, I popped in Come and then NPS. It seems peeps on the org don't like NPS at all.

When this came out, I played the CD to death nearly. The vocals and KILLA horns made me like the Black album with "Freaks On This Side"... The Go-Go touch on that got me too... But U got: "Freaks...", "Madd Sex", "NPS", "The One", etc. THIS IS A FUNKY ALBUM.
Also, Prince's hands are all over this record... elec drums, keys, etc... There could have been a little more guitar and Bass guitar, though...

Come, although a bit scattered, just rocks... "come", "Letitgo", "Papa", "Dark"...

It's all based on personal taste, etc. BUT...

Peace,

G.

"Come" is nastily delicious, for sure.

But comparing NPS to The Black Album??? shake

I think NPS is a very good album. It's gold compaired to everything album in the UK chart right now. It sounds great (Great instruments and stuff) Wasted Kisses is wonderful. A very funky undertone in a very sensual song. Very different.

Oh yeah... I forgot about "Push It Up"...right before "freaks..."

The Black Album comparison was because of the "dark" tone.

I do like "The One." "Push it Up" does nothing for me. I cannot play this whole album all the way through. That banging fucking synth bassline cracks my skull eventually.

Anxiety

There are a handful of songs on NPS that are okay, but there are also some really rank ones, too.

I dont care what ANYONE says - I like Emancipation & New Power Soul a lot. Both have their weaknesses, but (with the exception of TRC) they stand above much of his output of recent years.

That's good enough 4 me. music U can keep yer Chaos & Disorders and (s)NEWS's!

Come and NewPower Soul are similar in that they have both aged well. music

Come wasn't received all that well when it came out; and now it's far more widely respected...give NPS a few more years to come into fashion.

Pagey

I feel the same about NPS as I do Come. Its good...but nothing spectacular. I certainly don't hate NPS like some people here. The only track I really am not crazy about is I Like Funky Music & that ballad towards the beginning of the CD (forgot the name). The rest is good party/work out music for me.

Come is a really good album, the 1st few tracks are like a suite of music , Come drifting into some weird sexual wonderland and then seguing into Space , how often did Prince connect 2 songs musically like that in the 80s and 90s , apart from the first few tracks of Parade (and to a lesser extent parts of Lovesexy) its not a common thing for him,and Pheromone is nasty nasty funk,I love it.Even the seemingly weaker tracks like Solo and Letitgo have blossomed over time.

NPS I like too,its a bit underrated, though I do think its his weakest album of the 90s to be honest.

Finally someone with some senses. NPS sucks, we all now that, so why are we discussing this?

Ah what the hell, let me explain anyway: smile

Some songs on NPS are 'only' weak, like 'Until U're In My Arms Again' or 'Mad Sex'. We've seen a lot of weak songs like these on Prince records since TGE.

But the difference to most other albums is that this album is full of songs that are really really bad. Had I heard 'Freaks On This Side', 'Push It Up', 'Newpower Soul', 'Funky Music' and (most of all) 'Shoo-Bed-Ooh' before NPS was released, I would have undoubtedly thought that they were fakes. Prince has never, and hopefully never will, release songs as poor as those five.

That said, even on NPS there are two brilliant moments: 'Come On' and 'Wasted Kisses'.

Altho I don't like the NPS album, there are two tracks that
are simply great. First of all "Come On", which goes without
further explanation.

Second is "Mad Sex". Don't know why, but I love this song,
it's the perfect song to play the morning after you've had
some really perverted antisocial gutwrenching toecringing
toothaching earthshattering animalistic sex.

"Mad Sex" always makes me laugh the morning after and think
'hey, you only live the once...'
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Miles

Co-sign IstenSzek on 'Mad Sex' - cool, fun song.

Also, I dig 'Come On', 'The One' (surely deserves to be seen as a P classic), 'Wasted Kisses', and, strangely, 'Freaks on This Side', altho the last one I'm not sure why ...

Most of the rest is (for Prince) truly baaad.

Naw Daniel, NEWS and Chaos and Disorder that I don't like. I was agreeing with BananaC. Looking at my post, I did word it kind of wrong.

Emmancipation definately has some worthwhile tracks. But I've only listened to Chaos once and I have never listed to the entire NEWS.

Newpower Soul is a great album - maybe some of the songs are a little weak but as an ALBUM it rocks!

If the CD didn't have track-indexing on it (like Lovesexy didn't) and you were forced to listen to it as a whole, I think you'd all appreciate it more.

I'd compare it to The Black Album in that its got a vibe which flows through the album. A lot of his 90s albums (from Graffiti Bridge onwards) just sound like collections of songs - high quality bootlegs. Newpower Soul sounds like a party.

The first time I heard NPS, I was like... bored

Then I was like zzz

Then Chaka Khan's voice woke me up - ooh, a good song. Finally!

Then I got all bored again, but woke up just in time to grow fond of Wasted Kisses. biggrin
