Right now, Prince could only wish for to write a song that is as upbeat, as unpretentious (as in: no religious bullshit)and as catchy as 'Hey Ya'! Don't stone me now, Prince has done this but it has been too long!
This song is an original, especially coming from a guy who is originally a hip-hop artist. This also counts for the video, which is one of the best I have seen in a long long time. Prince has never been much of a video-artist, his video almost always left you with some awkward feeling...
Is Andre influenced by Prince? Sure, but he is not ripping him off, he's taking it to another level. And he's scoring a hit!

'Hey Ya' is just great!

BTW last night Rosario told me that I am her daddy while she was sitting on my d... So you guys buzz off!

Andre is talented and wants to be a better artist. That is commendable.I don't think Andre is trying to be Prince or outdo him.He is just very influenced by him.How could he not be?Andre is an intelligent music lover. He knows what's up?What artist since Prince has been on the scene hasn't been influenced by him?I dare say none!I hear things in people's music that I know came from Prince records.

I actually don't hear Prince in Hey Ya.I more hear a Beatles type ,TAMI show type thang.Though, the song by Andre featuring my love,Rosario Dawson,She Lives in My Lap,is sooo Princely to me.He even sorta uses a Camille type voice.

Andre is influenced by Prince,P-Funk,Ew&f,Jimi,JB,et al.Just like Q-Tip and pharrell. It's a shame that Tip's album was flushed down the toliet. He,like andre ,was moving away from "rapping" and into a more organic live music thing withTip singing and playing drums and so forth,.Aroista felt it wouldn't sell so they squashed it.Luckily,i downloaded a lot of it.It's just interesting how the bar was raised by Dirty mInd and so forth and it brought us Lenny,Andre,Q-Tip,and countless more.

You're right on She Lives In My Lap being very Prince-like. This is one of the few tracks on there that SCREAMS, "Prince influenced the fuck outta me!!!" With the guitar and the vocal effects used, it's quite obvious, but it's a great song in its own right.

You are wrong about one thing, though. Rosario is MY love, not yours. smile

keep your damn eyes and hands and OTHER parts off MY woman!!When she looks into the camera it's to gaze at me!!You can have the Hilton sisters or the Olsen twins...leave me and Rosario to our own devices.

Sure...when she looks into the camera, she sure is gazing at you. She's saying goodbye to ya and that she's found her new and last love, moi. Rejection can be hard, bruh, so if there's anything I can do for ya, like cut your brake line or make you some of my famous Cult flavored Kool-Aid, don't hesitate to ask!

I love the album! The video is really cute and the
song is pretty cool, but there are some way stronger
joints on there and I can't wait for them to come out!!!

For those that have heard the album...there's a hook
in "She's always in my lap" where he says, "Forever my
fiance" that totally reminds of a song of P's and I've
been racking my brain to figure it out. It sounds like something from either "Letitgo" or another song on "Come"...can anyone help???

~Gi

P.S. Yo, David I KNOW you're going to check out Teena Marie
and Slick Rick next month in San Jo!! I wish I could go!!! wink

This is just typical talk when someone descides to do a record simular to another artist.. I honestly believe Andre isnt tryin to be like prince, of course there are some people that are just too consumed with prince everyday, so yes, it must seem like that. Andre's cd has a lot of sounds that are simular to a lot of other artists.. besides prince..

BUt you know Andre wants to be Prince .

Heavily influenced by Prince? Yes. Wants to be him? Not really.

Reading his interviews and following his and Outkast's career over the years, I think Andre is walking in some of the same footsteps as Prince as an artist.

The "wants to be" language makes it seem that Andre is somehow doing this as a gimmick or is insincere when he expresses his frustrations in the industry, his boredom with hip hop as a creative person, not wanting to perform the same songs over and over again, etc. That seems sincere on Andre's part.

Ok ..he is sincere in all of those things he feels (I never doubted any of those things nor made alluisons that he wasn't deep or have his own issues or standards etc)..the state of music, boredom with hip hop etc.(just like Prince was bored with musical styles of the popular era in his time)..but he still wants to be Prince...sincere or not.

thank goodnes for Princes influence

I've never ever really listened to Outkast, but 'Hey Ya' has been my favourite tune as of late and I had this strange feeling that it so closely resembled something from Prince.

Now I feel even more idiotic to think that I'd be the only to think this way.

There's no reason to feel idiotic...'Hey Ya!' needn't necessarily a resemblance to any Prince-song to remind me of Prince...it's more a desire that nowadays Prince would be able to do something straight-forward like that!

as far as 'hey ya' it is closer to being a Sugar Ray
song than a P song, and 3000 may sound a smidge like P
in the first part of his rap on 'Spread'. And maybe I'll even admit to 3000 being under the influence (of P) with the 'She's Always' In My Hair/ She's Always In My Lap' deal.

Maybe it's just me, but there was something sorta Beatles about the video. Maybe it was the shots of all the screaming female fans. It also reminded of Paul McCartney and Wing's video for "Coming Up." In it all the band members were played by either Paul or his wife Linda.
