Andre is NOT doing Prince better than Prince...he is if you like pretenders to the throne. Andres recent career is drenched with wanting to be Prince and Pfunk..Prince could do what Andre does in his sleep.

I must be the only one who doesn't think this song screams "prince!"

Andre has his own thing goin', he's inspired by prince, but not coppying.

and if this was a a new prince song, I'm sure half of the people at the org would find something wrong with it

True Hey Ya doesnt really seem Princely to me but some other songs he has done are reminiscent of a Princely-Pfunkish touch

You guys haven't even listened to the song. Prince hasn't done anything like this and he certainly hasn't done any videos in this fashion. The fact that Andre is a great rapper puts him in a different league than Prince who's certainly the better musician. Andre never claimed to be the second coming or heir to the throne so I don't see the reason for the backlash.
The song on The Love Below that reminds me of Prince is Spread-- not the music per se but his voice sounds like Prince's in If I Was Your Girlfriend.

I totally agree with this.

Anyway, if it were a Prince song, I'd be excited to hear his older vibe at work again.

Is it necessary to call Andre a pretender? Can we say that Prince was wanting to be like his influences too? We cannot rob originality from one and claim that the other was not a copycat as well.

They are both original--in the way they combine their previous influences, and with respect to the contexts/genres in which they are each working, which are entirely different. Prince should be judged within the world of r&b that he came out of (and did it so masterfully) to enter into rock/funk/pop; while Andre must be judged within the world of hip hop from which he is emerging.

Nah, I can't see that as a Prince song. It's not really his style. It's different from your average Hip-Hop, but that's not to say that it isn't Hip-Hop.

Sometimes..Ande tool Princes whole "out there" dress n drag and music sheme..along with PFunks as well...im notsaying he other was not a copycat as well. BUt you know Andre wants to be Prince .

yeah they are both semi original (because all Prince did was cop rnb disco dandies, then the punk aesthetic, then sly and family stone all inclusive image and focus package) but you cant tell me Andre is not HEAVILY influenced by Prince

Andre is talented and wants to be a better artist. That is commendable.I don't think Andre is trying to be Prince or outdo him.He is just very influenced by him.How could he not be?Andre is an intelligent music lover. He knows what's up?What artist since Prince has been on the scene hasn't been influenced by him?I dare say none!I hear things in people's music that I know came from Prince records.

I actually don't hear Prince in Hey Ya.I more hear a Beatles type ,TAMI show type thang.Though, the song by Andre featuring my love,Rosario Dawson,She Lives in My Lap,is sooo Princely to me.He even sorta uses a Camille type voice.

Andre is influenced by Prince,P-Funk,Ew&f,Jimi,JB,et al.Just like Q-Tip and pharrell. It's a shame that Tip's album was flushed down the toliet. He,like andre ,was moving away from "rapping" and into a more organic live music thing withTip singing and playing drums and so forth,.Aroista felt it wouldn't sell so they squashed it.Luckily,i downloaded a lot of it.It's just interesting how the bar was raised by Dirty mInd and so forth and it brought us Lenny,Andre,Q-Tip,and countless more.

Heavily influenced by Prince? Yes. Wants to be him? Not really.

Reading his interviews and following his and Outkast's career over the years, I think Andre is walking in some of the same footsteps as Prince as an artist.

The "wants to be" language makes it seem that Andre is somehow doing this as a gimmick or is insincere when he expresses his frustrations in the industry, his boredom with hip hop as a creative person, not wanting to perform the same songs over and over again, etc. That seems sincere on Andre's part.

You're right on She Lives In My Lap being very Prince-like. This is one of the few tracks on there that SCREAMS, "Prince influenced the fuck outta me!!!" With the guitar and the vocal effects used, it's quite obvious, but it's a great song in its own right.

You are wrong about one thing, though. Rosario is MY love, not yours. smile

Right now, Prince could only wish for to write a song that is as upbeat, as unpretentious (as in: no religious bullshit)and as catchy as 'Hey Ya'! Don't stone me now, Prince has done this but it has been too long!
This song is an original, especially coming from a guy who is originally a hip-hop artist. This also counts for the video, which is one of the best I have seen in a long long time. Prince has never been much of a video-artist, his video almost always left you with some awkward feeling...
Is Andre influenced by Prince? Sure, but he is not ripping him off, he's taking it to another level. And he's scoring a hit!

'Hey Ya' is just great!

BTW last night Rosario told me that I am her daddy while she was sitting on my d... So you guys buzz off!
