Desire Such a beautiful song... I'm thinking I dig the Prince version way better then I do the The Family's version.
Don't get me wrong, both are great, but Prince voice just gets 2 me. I love hearing Eric Leeds playing in the background, while Prince sings the touching lyrics... makes my eyes water up .

I like this one too.
It's got such a "happy" tempo. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

some of the most gorgeous lyrics I've ever heard...

The Prince version is amazing. I always found the Family version boring, and Prince sings it much better than St Paul (or whatever his name was). Erics sax is playing some wonderful stuff, and the beat and tempo drive the song. I always thought The Family's version just plodded along too much. Prince must one day release his version of the demos for this album. Its such a good album that goes unnapreciated whilst it is by one of his protegee acts.

I dare anyone to find fault with this song

Prince's voice is better, but the music to the family version is much better. Prince's version when it comes to the music sounds like some kind of upbeat tropical song.

Ur saving Ur love 4 some soldier. Who'd much rather die than stay by Ur side. Where were U then Prince during the war?!?

Absolutely gorgeous! One of my favourite P songs!
I love The Family version as well as P's own version, I couldn't decide which is better... IMHO probably the definitive version of this song would be the P version with the orchestration of the released song.

Since you bring up the matter of the "upbeat tropical" element of 'Desire', I am suddenly reminded of the similarity of this demo's coda to that of the version of 'Wouldn't You Love To Love Me?' that Prince sent Michael Jackson and eventually recorded by Taja Sevelle. . The Prince versions of High Fashion and Mutiny are also superb.

Yeah, i absolutly love this song. But my personal
favourite version is not the one you all have been talking about(i think, but i am not sure). You like the version that`s close to the album version, but has the drums still in it, correct? But what about the rehearsal take? Do you know this one (the family rehearsal no1 summer 1984)? You can hear it on "Purple rush vol 3". I highly recommend to listen to that one.

There's definitely a very sexy vibe right there. It has a much darker, languid tone, to be sure, and kinda reminds me of 'Slave To Love' by Bryan Ferry. . "You don't frighten us, English pig dogs. I LOVE this song. To me, it's the best of The Family stuff. It's so sexy and gentle.
I think it would've sounded lovely on Parade.

But when I listen to Prince's version of"Desire," ecstasy is MINE! You know I picked up THE FAMILY album on cassette a few years ago at a flea market. It was still in the shrink wrap and it was only one dollar. I remember freaking out...picking it up, looking over my shoulder for 'fams' to jump out of the goddamn woodwork to snatch it from me. I was glassy eyed the entire tour of the flea market. The guy I was dating at the time kept asking me if I was ok. All I wanted was to get home to pop that baby in a cassette player. As for 'Desire,' well it is a brilliant song, the orchestration, the sounds of the surf, towards the end, brilliant. Never heard Prince's version though.
