On Disc 2, Da Bang.

It's sexy, and it rocks, then it's sexy, then it rocks, then it's sexy, then it rocks. That's its structure, and it's fucking awesome.

Calhoun Square is an nice followup, plays right after...

There's actually quite a few gems on there - unfortunately there's also some obvious filler, the tracking order makes no sense and the segueing is bad.

But I am happy for it. I got tracks like Interactive, Strays Of The World, Hide The Bone, Acknowledge Me and Ripopgodazippa in good quality - at last!
Plus very good surprises like PoomPoom (I LOVE it when he screams!), Da Bang, She Gave Her Angels and So Dark.
The rest is disappointing, though. The old Revolution Era tracks are - with Sexual Suicide as the only exception - in versions that are inferior to what is circulating on bootleg. The live tracks and the remixes are: bored

I agree with funkaholic and I can't believe no-one else has said it!! It is one of his best tracks - it just has everything you expect from Prince - a microcosm of Prince's vast catalogue if you will.

The problem is - it is the first track on the album and is so much better than anything else on there, you can't help but feel disappointed. In fact, Dream Factory is about the only other tune on Crystal Ball that is worthy (in terms of sheer creativity) or could possibly sit next to Crystal Ball!!

Other standout tracks for me, suprlus to the 2 already mentioned are Da Bang, Calhoun Square (its like Led Zeppelin funk!), What's my Name?, MOVIE STAR (classic Prince humour) and I actually quite like Make Yo Mamma Happy - I don't know if it quite qualifies as being the proof that Prince wanted to show to whoever it was that had been listening to Sly that the funk lived in Paisley, but its sharp, clean and the coda is just marvellous smile

I LOVE Crystal Ball. One of his best albums, even though it's scatterbrained.

Disc One:

Crystal Ball
Dream Factory
Ripopgodazippa
Love Sign
Movie Star

Disc Two:

Da Bang
What's My Name?
Crucial
Sexual Suicide
Strays Of The World

Disc Three:

Days Of Wild
She Gave Her Angels
18 & Over
The Ride
Goodbye

All awesome.

So Dark

In my opinion this is a perfect example of Prince not knowing when to leave a track alone. The original is wonderful because of it's stripped down sound. So Dark ripped the soul out of it.

Despite the fac that everything's in a random order and there isn't much of a flow to the three discs, I think it's underrated as an 'album'.

A full-length version of 'Crucial' would have been nice.

Definitely not the lousy edit we were lumbered with in the end.

Funny how some of the tracks that I really don't like seem to be on people's fave lists.

18 & Over and the Loose! Remix are complete wastes of time and (very little) effort. Seriously, they could have been done by a bedroom musician with a copy of Cubase! Boring. People certainly wouldn't be stomping all over these 2 in clubs I go to, as suggested by the liner notes! Uninventive.

The "phatter than the original" (puh-leeaase!) Dark is also rubbish! The original was great, this sounds both twee and tired. Unremarkable.

Strays of the World - just doesn't sit with me. Ok, so it was written for a Broadway show, but that doesn't mean it has to sound like a typical Broadway show song, does it? Uninspiring.

Miles

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. 'Crystal Ball' (the track) is God, Jah, Brahma and Jehovah's Kingdom Come all rolled into one. Possibly his greatest single track.

Call me mad, but I do hear echoes of this classic on NEWS, mainly on 'East'.

Other personal CB highlights would be -

Movie Star
Interactive
Calhoun Square
What's My Name (one of his meanest ever)
Sexual Suicide
Cloreen Bacon Skin (too long, but so dirty!)
Strays of the World (should have ended 'Come')
Days of Wild
Last Heart (sweet and cool)
Make Your Mama Happy

But, ultimately, too much filler, not enough killer.

Yeah. Why there's an edit of this and a full length Cloreen Baconskin is beyond me.
