'God' - Vocal or Instrumental?

In the beginning, there was God. But which 'God'?

I'm sure someone can tell me which version of this track Prince recorded first, and which second, and when (obviously 1983/84, but any dates?). Also, who played on them? I guess 'God Vocal' is all Prince, but 'Instrumental'? Any Revolution members on there?

Finally, which version do you prefer? I love 'God Vocal', just for its amazing, insane, 'beautiful strange' quality, and its interesting keyboard playing, but I think 'God Instrumental' has the edge, as it's so damned gorgeous.

Over to you.

The Instrumental is what NEWS only wishes it could become. Compare the two and cringe at his lack of focus.

Instrumental. Beautiful sounds and a rude image association - nice!

Instrumental, but I like both.

Actually, for a while I've been thinking of combining the two into one song...mixing the vocal over the instrumental.

By the way, the instrumental is all Prince.

I can tell it's him a mile off on the drums.

And the rest of the instrumentation is obviously him.

No question. Instrumental.

The vocal may be Prince's most embarrassing moment. I have played that for friends and they laughed until their sides hurt. When I am trying to impress friends about Prince, that is the LAST thing that I'd play for them. Almost 20 years later and my friends still leave messages mocking Prince's vocals on that on my answering machine. Make them stop!
