I think it's completely unnecessary for him to do a "hits" tour in the states, regardless of whether or not he intends on retiring certain songs from his set list. Most of us have heard these songs performed into the ground to begin with, and an overhaul in the songs he performs live would be welcomed. Of course, if he decides to concentrate on non-fan/fam audiences with this tour by attempting to attract the casual concert-going music fan, that could be another story...

I think a greatest hits tour is exactly what the non NPGMC world wants to hear.
I took mates with me to see Prince at the Hammersmith Apollo in London last year... they loved it but really wanted to hear more hits. This gives all those people, the people who like Prince of old but know nothing about what he does now, the chance to see a legend in action.
Plus, it will generate a huge amount of income that will fund Prince's future releases.. the jazz, the blues, the oddities that we love.

The last thing I wanna see is another Greatest Hits tour. I have already seen enuff Nude shows, and I really dont want more of that. His current band is the tightest funk group he has ever had, and thats what he should play: Funk. Stone-cold-Funk. Gittin down to it.

I doubt he will dare bringing this Australian show to Europe though.

You're just too lucky! I have to say I'm envious of anyone who can say they've seen him perform anything into the ground (unless of course you're spending way too much time watching old live performances). Having only managed to see him twice (so far) I'd be happy to see him play whatever he likes. I get your point, though. Greatest hits tours aren't really what the dedicated fan is after. You could always give it a miss this time around!

On the other hand, tours aren't just for the dedicated either; I imagine there would probably be as many if not more people interested in greatest hits as not.
We can hope that the greatest hits tour is just for HK/Oz and other parts that he gets to far too infrequently.
It seems to me that it would make sense to play all your hits when you haven't been there for 10 years (or ever), but obviously not so sensible in a country you tour every year (or two?).

Is there any fact/rumour/gossip that the US will be getting the greatest hits?

You might get NEWS Live instead...

At least this time he is honest about playing his hits...

you should have seen the show in Berlin last year. At first he said: "If you came here to hear Purple Rain, you are at the wrong place. The 80s are over, you aint gonna hear none of that."

Guess what the encore was...

True. Its moderate pop. It was written to make the charts. No big deal. Silly lyrics. Boring. I dont dig Prince`s ballads too much. The only truly soulful lovesong he has ever written is "Adore".

I wanna hear a 20 minute encore of Adore.

It looks good, im glad hes singing a mixture from his career and look he's singing Purple Rain again. I think this is an attempt to get more mainstream and accessible again and thats a good thing

Mainstream is not a good thing, because artist tend to lose touch with their own concept of composition on the way in order to please the mass.

I can assure you that this tour is NOT an attempt to go back mainstream. Its simply a treat for the massses of Australia, who havent seen the brotha in more than a decade. Returning to the US or Europe, Prince will continue his quest in experimental jazz/funk/fusion music. He has found his musical path and he is willing to walk it. I am very glad about that.

Granted. Its a nice little blues number. But nothing in the league of Adore or even better If I was your Girlfriend.

I really try to be a kinder, gentler Stymie, but...Prince's fucking Gemini personalities just wreck my nerves. Is it about the money or isn't it? Does he want to appeal to the mainstream or doesn't he? I am so sick of the 'hits' I could fucking scream. Can I please hear Tamborine or Condition of the Heart or We Can Funk or something I have not heard or seen twelve million times? If he does a greatest hits show if/when the tour comes to Chicago, I am not going.

Incidentally, 'Adore' has become something of a live highlight, particularly during the past three years or so. Prince has polished the performance of 'Adore' to perfection and the added schmaltz works really well too.

The response at the Apollo was nothing short of spectacular.

He played both 'Tamborine' and 'Condition Of The Heart' at the London Apollo last year lol

Exactly what is it about 'Condition Of The Heart' that makes you want to "run away every time"? Is it the song's heartfelt lyric or the lovely piano arpeggio that adorns it?

And there was I thinking you were as tough as nails, Soulpower...lol

I dont like the whole pace of that tune... I dont think its heartfelt at all, he just wants to sound like that. Now in Adore.. you know that he is truly feeling it.

Actually, we are in some agreement here. But only some.

I have always found the vocals of 'Condition Of The Heart' as rendered in the studio version, to be some of Prince's direst, from a purely technical standpoint. Did he have a cold when he recorded this? Why did he not clear that frog from his throat? Ah, questions, questions...

That's not to say it wasn't a passionate performance imbued with soul and in the best gospel tradition. Technically speaking, though, the vocal delivery was something of a damp squib and had I been Susan Rogers I certainly would have taken Prince to task about it.

Witness the fact that during those rare occasions he has played his song live (and during those even rarer occasions when he actually adds any vocal to it) P has always managed to easily surpass the studio version.

Maybe he should re-record the vocals to 'Condition Of The Heart' one day. Anybody else feel the same way about this?

By the way, it has previously been reported that 'Condition Of The Heart' is all about Susannah, so chances are it was a heartfelt performance. Not a pleasant experience for Prince, but heartfelt just the same.

'Adore' on the other hand was different. Unbridled lust is what I read into it.
