Some of both. Parts I love. Parts wear out their welcome.

I think it's brilliant! Although it's a bit over the top towards the end... Great musical arrangements...

Dramatic. But after all these years I still don't know what the song is about.
Anyone want to explain? 3 Chains O' Gold If I don't think about the fact that she left me If I don't see the pearls fall from the sky If I don't hear the accusations of blasphemy If I don't feel the tears in my eyes This is the best day of my life U say u'll call me and then and then u don't I'll want 2 kiss u and then I won't We both do nothing and call it love Is this love? Is this love? This morning I wanted a cup of coffee But I didn't have any cream Last night I wanted some inspiration But I didn't have any dreams Coupled with the fact that u belong 2 another Whose name is self-righteousness So evil girl, if one of us has a date with the undertaker, which one will it be? U can cry 4 ever, but u'll get no sympathy This is the best day of my life I've got 3 chains o' gold And they will shine 4 ever They are the nucleus of my soul Melt down, no, they will never I've got 3 chains o' gold And they will shine 4 ever They are the nucleus of my soul Melt down, no, they will never Give back the chains - if you don't you will die Nothing should come between you and I I've got 3 chains o' gold And they will shine 4 ever If one of us has 2 go U will go before me If one of us has 2 go (3 chains o' gold) U will go before me (3 chains o' gold) u will go before me, baby (they will shine 4 ever) cuz I sho 'nuff say u will (3 chains o' gold) (u will go before me) (u will go before me) (u will go before me) (u will go before me) I've got 3 chains o' gold They gonna shine... Forever, forever, forever (3 chains o' gold)

Thing is, it's such an elaborate pastiche of Queen type rock opera songs that you have to admire it musically on some level. It could be taken semi seriously if it weren't for blatantly OTT parts like 'If it wasn't for the fact that you belong to another whose name is Self Reightous Ness' which I HATE. It's fun.

Not sure. I kept asking myself that exact question over and
over when I developed a new fondness for the o(+> album two or three weeks ago. I listened to it a lot in my car and I have to say, I do quite like the song. I'm just not sure what to think of it. Like with the rest of that whole album, there are moments of sheer genius, but they are off-set with very lame kitsch and toe-crinching silliness [I need a spelling checker]. But all in all, I think it's quite a nice tune. Perhaps I started feeling so dubious about the album ever since I saw the 3ChainsOfGold video. That kind of made the images for the songs way to weird for my taste. I keep seeing Prince on rollerskates in a silk bathrobe with a Venetian mask on and a typhoon hairdo. That kind of thing will make anyone hinge toward "drivel" when confronted with the music again and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Fantastic songs, fun storyline - although I get the feeling I'm laughing at him rather than with him. It's bonkers but fun. "You know, you're the classic example of the inverse ratio between the size of the mouth and the size of the brain"

I'll go with that. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

Like capers, anchovies or really runny brie, it's probably only for the cognoscenti.
For a plebean like myself, it has the whiff of drivel - not what I would suggest to showcase the man's genius. *****************************************

It's like Anna Stesia, Anna Christian, and Others here with us. These four songs are rough, unpolished gems. _________________________________________

The exception being that Anna Stesia is one of his alltime best songs, if not THE best song. Plus "Others Here With Us" is probably one of his most enigmatic and bewildering songs. Haunting and scary. "Chains" has none of that. It just walks a very thin line between beautiful and fugly. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Oh, I love it.
was my first new release as a Prince fan, and as such has always had a special place in my heart. 3 Chains isn't ground-breaking, it's pretty dirivitive, but I like it, and I love the guitar work at the end. It's an album that holds together extremely well, haven't heard it in God knows how long, but it's a classic CD, IMO. The out-take segues were well edited IMO, they might have obscured the story line of the "rock opera", but it was a pretty thin story line any way, and the fact that the video wasn't released for WAY too long after the album meant that the segues would have just stood out even more as a nuisance. I mean that "Oh my God, what is that!" one with Mayte and some little brat - good job she's pretty cuz she can't act or sing for shit. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm a sucker for a major chord

I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it.I love the guitar lick, the lyrics and th strength of his voice. And about 3 chains of Gold. I love this song, especially the first part (the musical interlude with the lyrics "U say U'll call me and then U don't / I'll want 2 kiss U and then I won't / we both do nothing and call it love/ is this love? is this love?), and of course his incredible guitar work. I LOVE THIS SONG.

Marvellous, pompous nonsense. Maybe Prince's tribute to Freddie Mercury, who must have died a year or two before its release.
I think of '3 Chains' as a sort of cousin of 'Strays of the World', musically anyway.

I'd call it pretentious genius; which is why I love our little maggot. He definetly listened to Bohemian Rhapsody before Mayte went down on him. All you others say Hell Yea!!

I wonder if Tommy Lee has seen it? Someone ought to post him a copy, along with THAT wedding program. That would shit him up, how can he stand in the way of destiny? He is one of the Seven who must fall! "You know, you're the classic example of the inverse ratio between the size of the mouth and the size of the brain"

I quite like it, its very dramatic and exciting but im sure its trying to emulate Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody

probably my favorite show off prince song.
i absolutely love it to bits
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
it's neither genius nor drivel, actually. it's just a fun track. an obvious ripoff of bohemian rhapsody in parts, but who gives a fuck. i learned quickly with the symbol album to ignore the supposed storyline and just enjoy it as a collection of songs. but yeah, it sounds like it was a fun song for him to record. tribute? possibly. who knows? who cares? Keep your headphones on.
