Prince is Tainted (Love)

Prince is tainted. His problems with the past club choices (arguable). His suing of websites…the crystal ball release…religion…etc Jehovah knows what else has tainted his work to some extent with some of his fans. No matter what he releases, there will always be a bad taste in the mouths of some that spits out whatever he serves, even if it is, will be, brilliance

mmm, not exactly tainted...it's kinna like what i call 'the artist's curse'--you can't do right by all, but you can't stop/change for others cuz it's sumfin you must do. some folks'll like it, some won't.

can't please everybody, but at least there's a few folks out there who do dig whatcha do. nod

Wait, are you saying these things have tainted his work or our appreciation of it?

Which is not to say that some of his exploits have not influenced some of his music possibly

These are the exact things that have turned me from an obsessive fan of his work to "A new Prince CD? Eh, I'll get around to buying it at some point, I suppose." Maybe that's why I just can't get into TRC even after unsucessfully giving it a few chances to grow on me. "Chocolate Invasion"? Yeah, I'll probably get around to buying it at some point after it's released, I suppose. shrug

Is it a problem separating the man from the music?

lovebizzare

true.

I think it's a shame that some let Prince's personal and non-musical doings cloud their vision of his work.

Well, what will probably happen is I'll get "Chocolate Invasion" and realize there's a lot of great stuff I've been missing out on the past couple of years and have a change of heart. smile

That's cuz people want an artist whose dick they can suck, rather than someone who's music they'll listen to without obsessing over his every move.

Those most disappointed are those who raised him up the highest beyond the boundaries of artist/musician, into demigod/savior/mayor-of-uptown/leader-of-the-freaks and all in between.

nupwrsoul broke it down

once u raise a musician 2

unrealistic expectations,

there's no where 4 him 2

go but down 2 ground level

human level

believe it or not, prince

is human

yes, he is a magnificent

musician, awe inspiring

and innovative,

however, he's his own man

complete with flaws and disappointment

i choose 2 hang in there with him

i can stand the sunshine

and the rain

To be fair though, I dont think some who let his endeavors taint their view of the music have exactly put him on a god-like pedastal. Some have, and one could say they are the ones who see no wrong in what Prince has done in the past(if there is wrong etc). It isn't about raising him to an unfair standard specidfically, its about just being pissed at what he has done, enough to block being objective to his music.

True. I think deification and demonization are flipsides of the same coin, reflecting the same kind of extremist obsessions. Just as there are some for whom Prince can do no wrong; there are others for whom Prince can do no right.

Were u just somewhere in the middle?
Not 2 good, not 2 bad?

I'm too in awe of what he can do as a musician to let the petty stuff get in the may. Greatness does not equal saintness. Thomas Jefferson was quite a huge hypocrite, but that aside he still was a genuis of a man that helped create something grander than himself. All great humans are flawed becuase all humans are flawed. Anyone who would let the flawed human get in the way of appreciating the art is very foolish.
