Probably more than 30 times. But I have two copies of it and
one of them has been playing in my car for some weeks.

I like the album a lot. In fact, I've listened to it more
than Xpectation, altho I do like that one as well.

Same thing with the C-Note EP, I must have listened to that
at least 50 times all the way through and multiple times to
several tracks on their own.

I don't understand why so many people complain about these
instrumental albums since me, personally, I've been waiting
for new instrumental discs ever since Madhouse 8 and 16.

I love them all.

Just approximating, I'd say I've listened to the whole album 30 or more times. I'm definitely a NEWS lover.

I feel sorry for the people that have only listened to the album once. I understand that instrumental jazz may not be everyone's thing... but, how can any fan listen to ANYTHING by Prince only once??? Just like any other Prince album, if you listen to it only once then you're missing a whole lot! One listen, and NEWS is just abstract rambling. The more you listen the more the album begins to take shape and form with purpose. You begin to hear Princes "voice" in the music... not his voice with words, but his voice through pure sound... the inflection, the emotion, it's all there. Just my opinion.

Well said! nod

Unfortunately, I find I keep wanting to skip to "South." I love South.

I concur, and I also love the extended versions and B-sides.

What is your take on the two unreleased '24' albums?

I liked the first "24", altho it sounds more synthesised
than the other Madhouse albums. It's a nice album but I
can see why it was kept in the tin.

The second "24" is a mishmash. I absolutely love the song
"Parlour Games" to bits. Lovely lovely tune.

There are also some other great moments on it, but as an
overall album I don't like it very much. Let alone play
it in it's entirety.

These new instrumental albums are lightyears better imo.
As were the two original madhouse albums and their b-sides.

Even though it's definitely a very smooth LP - and I would like to add it is VERY well played indeed - , I agree that the '93 Madhouse '24' is the weaker album of the two.
I find the series of segues confusing and annoying in equal measure, but hey, it was the '90s...

I actually can't get enough of '24' (the '88 version), particularly 'The Dopamine Rush Suite'. Truth be told it was far too brief for my liking, but the drum machine sound definitely connects it with much of that 'Lovesexy/Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic' era. The fact that parts of the album were incorporated by Miles Davis into his live repertoire further adds to its appeal.

I see both 'Xpectation' and 'N.E.W.S.' as a logical progression from the Madhouse project. You could not have had one without the other.

True. I would also love to hear some of the other more
enigmatic instrumental tracks Prince recorded 1985/1988
like "Tibet".

From what I read in DMSR they cut many many improvised
jams around the time they also made the first 2 Mashouse
albums and I would love to hear all of those.

Ah, the legendary Flesh sessions, no less!

Now that definitely is the Holy Grail and the proverbial missing link for all lovers of the Madhouse sound in terms of Prince exploring his jazz roots with a top-notch band.

Sadly, none of that material, quite apart from 'U Gotta Shake Something' and a brief snippet of 'Junk Music' as featured in 'Under The Cherry Moon', has seen the light of day in any shape or form.

But we live in hope wink

It's a stronger, more assured performance than that of 'Xpectation', to be sure.

'Xpectation' is pretty and well-played in many ways, but 'N.E.W.S.' is the uncompromising sound of real musicians who know each others playing inside out and are unafraid to experiment intuitively.

I've listened to N.E.W.S quite a bit - seemed like everyday there for a while. Mixed it in with TRC, ONA & ONAL. Listened to it this morning - put E.W. & S. on because I had 45 minutes before I had to leave for work & its great for timing things out in 14 minute portions.
Only I never listen to it when my wife is around - she don't like it at all.

The reverse happened to me. I couldn't get into Xpectations at all until I got NEWS.
It took listening to NEWS to make me go back & listen & enjoy Xpectations.
They make a good pair.

On the other hand I think CNOTE is a companion piece to ONAL.

I would say about 10 times which is quitte a lot for me as i always listen lots of new things.
I liked it from the first time and didn't need several listens to get into it...NEWS isn't a Prince album that will go down in history but it's definitely a pleasant one if you dig 70's Jazz/Funk...
