Definitely. He left the music indusrty in the dust with this album. Some artists are still playing catch up. Head is my fave. I rock that in some of my house music sets today and it still sounds fresh. Sounded pretty damn good in Waiting To Exhale as well.

Sister is the sleeping giant on this joint. No one was singing about incest in 1980!!! Let alone 2003. A classic record for sure. All the gals say hoe if your man's giving up the gold. All the fellas say ruff if you're only giving up the bone.

It was one of those albums that is above anything that was released in that decade. [This message was edited Mon Oct 20 16:44:23 PDT 2003 by Sdldawn]

The best cut on the album is Uptown followed closely by the undergroiund classic, When You Were Mine.
No other song personifies the young genius pre Purple Rain Prince of the early 80s better than Uptown.

This is where Prince became the Prince that we now know of..the freak came into being with DM
DM tidbit: Back when Sears carried records, we looked thgrough the collection and I saw DM..Looked at the back and read thbe titles and saw Prince jkust layin there like a prostitute...I thgought "he is weird, what happened to him?" Little did I know I would end up coming on my wedding gown. [This message was edited Mon Oct 20 19:17:55 PDT 2003 by rdhull] "Climb in my fur."

DIRTY MIND(the album) his best; no question. so raw and beautiful. nothing beats the fun of this album.
the bass is just perfect in the whole album. DIRTY MIND(the song) is the best opener for an album prince has. theat thumping beat is so pulsing. (i wish the hits didn't edit it, it doesn't work as well when it's short) then when the syths come in you feel so uplifted and just wanna dance. WHEN U WERE MINE: great pop rock tune with an awesome solo and bass. and the last verse/chorus rocks DO IT ALL NIGHT: the last great R&B funk Prince track. makes me wanna puff my chest and flick my wrists GOTTA BROKEN HEART: so so sweat but still edgy, having no and heaps of synths. and the mic bit at the end is just classic UPTOWN: This is the bomb to dance to. it's such a slow fun build up. such powerful lyrics HEAD: pure raw bass fuck. mean. rude. feel like biting a lizard or even some carpet. it's perfect SISTER: this completes the albums. showing prince off in chordal progression and how he can prove what he is in just two minutes. rockn. and the lyrics are so taboo and great. never been done before PARTYUP: perfect elongated bass guitary funk finish to the album. awesome voice work. and i love the party down synth bit. and the shouted lyrics at the end all in all this album just rocks and really made prince what prince is. he was no longer catergorised. sure controversy created a famous perfect awe around him. dirty mind did it with the music.

I didnt think I could love this album any more, but ive just bought it on vinyl, and ive developed a new obsession for it. The drums , bass guitar and rhythm guitar sound so raw and gritty, yet musically its really tight.
When U Were Mine is THE best song prince has done...ever. I love it love it love it. The lyrics, the rhythm guitar, the new wave vibe, I can just see the man on stage in a black suit and skinny tie performing this one. Gotta Broken Heart Again has grown on me, particularly since being reminded of it from the Live DVD. I like the simple guitar solo in this. Head is probably his best commercial funk effort. Everything about it works. The bass, the excellent beat, the lyrics and the excellent Dr Fink solo. How it pains me to think he'll never perform this one again. Dirty Mind...what can you say. This is like the sound of a "dirty mind". The sweaty, pulsating beat never ceases to make you wanna dance. Sister offended a lot of people when it came out, but Ive always interpreted this as being a song that prommotes the virtues of the family (families should support children not abuse them), not some sick ode to incest. A great bit of personal / social commentary. Uptown is kinda like Princes manifesto. His declaration of intent. He must kinda look around at society today and think that we've gone at least someway to acheiving the kind of tolerance he prommotes in Uptown. IMO Dirty Mind (closely followed by 1999 and Controversy) is the album that most accurately reflects Prince as both an artist and a person. He speaks his mind so freely on these albums and the music is all over the place yet acheives brilliant cohesion. All hail Dirty Mind. Play it to your friends and grandparents. Lets not let this prince gem be forgotten. BTW I once read an article with R.E.M's Peter Buck and he named Dirty Mind as his favourite party album...the man clearly has taste.

I've said it once and I'l say it again, Dirty Mind is Prince gone punk.
That was back when he was the muuufuggin' man! Nobody was taking the risks that he was taking. The music, the image, the taboos. It was revolutionary. It was Punk/New Wave for the R&B/Funk peoples. Prince wanted to do the nasty on this record, and he made no secret about it. After that the floodgates of obscenity were open. Prince ROCKS!!! Oh yeah, and that guitar sound. That clean, scratchy, reverberated, twangy sound. That's my guitar style now. That album was so inpirational on so many level. It was like Marvin's "Let's Get It On" for the '80s. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.
