If all these gals could sing as well as they could (and they wouldn't have got the gig if they couldn't) it is clearly the sound engineer's fault for not mixing their vocals high enough in their fold backs. In other words, they can't hear themselves or each other, and that translates into big trouble. I should've thought of that in the first place istead of starting this debate smile

It doesn't take much to start this debate believe me. Well whatever the problem was it was fixed by the Parade tour cause the backing vocals on that tour were amazing.

okay, as entertaining as you guys' exchanges are, can you please find some common ground?

everlasting, W&L just aren't rd's cup of tea. he doesn't hate them, but doesn't hold back on his negative thoughts toward them.

RD, everlasting simple prefers the W&L era of prince career to now, for whatever that reason may be, he just does. NAD he certainly likes W&L more than prince, and you don't say bad things about someone you like, right?

now, can y'all please stop?

Out of respect for you LoveBizzare I will let it go. You always try to be kind with this debate so I will drop it. And believe me I love Prince or I wouldn't be here and I love them all equal. I just don't like people not looking at both sides. But it's dropped.

I've always wondered about this topic myself.

I saw the tour live twice, have the PR Live video, and was watching the video clip (which is a different performance) a week ago.

I ALWAYS was shocked at the backing vocals on BIAS. I never heard the term "foldback" but I would guess that is part of the problem cuz they are definitely mixed way too high.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE W&L and Sheila, and I LOVE Prince when he was still Prince... but I still cringe when I hear them screech at "Stahh-ahhh-ahhh-ahhh-arrr" during the chorus. I have to go back and watch the Grammy performance and see if it sounds as bad then.

In the video clip version which starts with IWD4U, Sheila does this awesome beat on the timbales, right before Prince grunts, and says "Any dogs in the house?"

In terms of Mark doing Dez's part on 1999, I never can actually hear him !!!

Fold backs are those little things that when worn, look like hearing aids, or triangular little wedge-shaped speakers that sit on the floor in front of the performers that let them hear their own vocals (or in this case NOT). They face the performer, folding the sound back at them. (I am not a sound engineer, so this is best I can explain it!)
