BUT I was wondering how those 'smack', whip-cracking sounds R created during songs on the One Nite Alone tour. Hope some1 knows what Im on about. Is it a sample on a record spun by the DJ or something?

I don't own ONA (ducking)... but whip-like sounds are easy to create on a drum machine...

The "handclap" sound with a lot of reverb or echo will get that type of sound.

It is actually not the clap-pad, but the rimshot-pad tuned down on the Linn LM-1 drum machine. John Blackwell is triggering the sound from a sample, I believe.

Eleventeen is correct with "I know what you are talking about. That sound was triggered by John Blackwell off of an e-drum pad live." Look at 1+1+1 is 3 and you can actually seen Blackwell hit the electronic drum pad for this effect.

I know exactly what you are talking about and the sound is in the background of alot of his faster grooves - and sounds incredible live - doesn't it?

It is a tape of when Prince was whipping on Mayte.

That sound was so much better live, than on the Rainbow Children. The light show helped to put emphasis on it.

The sound itself may be a compressed sample of Prince saying "Shock!", or something to that effect. At least that's what it sounded like at the Celly.

It sounds effective when it's used in isolation, but it sounds awful when Blackwell plays a fill with it on the DVD.

It's also just a little too high in the mix on the DVD. I imagine if u were listening to it through headphones it would make u do that funny jolting, cringing thing u do when there's a sound with too much treble.

Its been said, but lets say it again!! It is a Linn drum sample, trigerred live by John Blackwell through a pad - he can clearly be seen playing it.

And, yes, it is a bit too high in the mix!
