I hate to say it, but I think Maxwell put a definitive stamp on the song.
Besides, I can't imagine Prince doing a cover of a song (any song) behind Maxwell. Not because he can't, but because it would be like "teacher trying to impress student" -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I love maxwell's version simply because it had better production - nothing against the original but it's kinda like seeing the exorcist now opposed to when you were little it just doesn't have the same effect.
As for a Prince version - I don't think it would fit him he's not a remake type - Other people remake HIS stuff- to me it would just be too weird.

No disrespect to Kate but Maxwell owns this now. Just like Jimi owned Watchtower "Climb in my fur."

God. Just because it has more instruments and is louder - that makes it better? I can't think of a more emotionless performance in the history of pop music than Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O'Conner. Why do overseas folks confuse bland delivery and fake tears with emotion?
The same thing applies to bands like New Order.

Oh lol...but remember I said even Kates version has me swingin...Maxwell did a faithful take on it with hardly any changes...in range as well..only th epticxh is a major difference... both versions make me emotional..but Maxwell "worked" it I guess "Climb in my fur."

Everytime I hear the Maxwell version, I think about the 150+ miles from Pensecola, Florida to Tallahassee...We must have played that song over 50 times on that trip, that's why it won't play now. I love me some Maxwell; but "Fortunate" is still my favorite Maxwell song. I still can't believe that R. Kelly wrote and produced it. SPREAD LOVE UNTIL THE SUN'S FINAL RISE--The Duality a.k.a. I thought it was great for Maxwell to cover it he sang the hell out of it...but I do prefer Kates because I heard her version first and, well, Kate Bush is a goddess. Lucky me I can enjoy both
