New Prince song on NPGMC

There's a new track playing in the re-opened Glam Slam room. It is a cooled down r&b song dealing with the temptation of forbidden love, titled 'What do U want me 2 do?'.

Instrumentation
The track's is drowned with drum programming, a bit retro sounding (it has a Dorothy Parker vibe). The song features a nice jazzy guitar-solo, tiny bits of organ and flute and some rhodes. Sounds like he played everything himself.

Lyrics

I see you pick me out from the crowd,
could it be the way I play guitar?
Master of the song, not too loud
One day maybe I will be a star
I see you pick me out like you want something
Shame on you baby, can't you see this ring?

How do you want me to do girl?
How do you want me to do babe?
How do you want me to do girl?
How do you want me to do babe?

I got a woman, you got your man
so we've got to do what's right
You'd get 'behected' (?) in other men's
if I were in your arms tonight

You try to get me under
that I say plunder
Boy oh boy, what a scam

How do you want me to do girl?
How do you want me to do babe? (Uuh)
How do you want me to do girl? (Ooh)
How do you want me to do babe?

You picked me out of the crowd and
Ooh just so bold and so proud and
Just like you want ev'rybody to just say
Wow! Didn't her mamma teach her better?
Ouw, dressed like that somebody's gonna get her!

I see you picked me from the crowd,
could it be the way I play guitar?
Master of the song, not too loud
I don't ever wanna be where you are

How do you want me to do girl? (Tell me)
How do you want me to do babe? (Uuh)
How do you want me to do girl? (Tell me, tell me!)
How do you want me to do babe? (I ain't trying to do that)
How do you want me to do girl?

Whehe smile

This was sent in as a news-item, but got posted here instead.
Might be a bit of a double-post, as it is discussed already in this forum.

I noticed a drawback though, I cannot edit the above post, which clearly
states my name as its author!

What Do U Want Me 2 Do?

I see you pick me out from the crowd
Could it be the way I play guitar?
Master of the soul (or soft?) – not 2 loud
1 day maybe I will be a star

I see u pick me out like u want something
Shame on u babe - can’t u see this ring?

What do U want Me 2 Do Girl?
What do U want Me 2 Do Babe?
What do U want Me 2 Do Girl?
What do U want Me 2 Do Babe?

I got a woman you got ur man
So we got 2 do what’s right
U’d get beheaded in other lands
If I were in ur arms 2nite
U try 2 get me under
That icy plunder - boy oh boy what a scam - ooh

What do U want Me 2 Do Girl?
What do U want Me 2 Do Babe?
What do U want Me 2 Do Girl?
What do U want Me 2 Do Babe?

U picked me out of the crowd and
Ooh - just so bold and so proud
And just like u want everybody 2 just say “wow”
Didn’t her momma teach her better? Ow
Dressed like that somebody gon’ get her…

I see u pick me from the crowd
Could it be the way I play guitar?
Master of the soul - not 2 loud
I don’t ever really wanna be where you are, where you are

What do U want Me 2 Do Girl?
What do U want Me 2 Do Babe?
What do U want Me 2 Do Girl?
What do U want Me 2 Do Babe?

[color=blue:c951ca9806:1b36f0f506]I think this may have been recorded during the "Rave..." sessions. Only because it is from the same 'return to the Linn drum and phased high-hat rhythm track vibe' from other "Rave ..." era tracks like "Juke Box Wit a Heartbeat" and "Props N Pounds". What a cool groove. I love it.

Yeah, I wanted to edit the title to state that the thread contains lyrics.

And I wanted to fine tune the lyrics.
It has some nasty errors.

I disagree on some of your views though...

'Master of the soul' is most certainly 'Master of the song' - he plays the guitar,
masters the song, does not play too loud. To master 'the' soul would be a rather inventive
way to tell the crowd he's playing from the heart

wink

'Icy plunder' - could be. I don't know. Both make sense, somewhat.

I agree on the 'You'd get beheaded in other lands' part. I could not get
that sentence right until I read someone's remark and it fell into the
puzzle.

I really don't know how the 'How do you...' part slipped in. Momentary lapse...
and it got copy/pasted so many times.

Yeah - I had a hard time figuring out what he was saying there with the "Master..." line, but I was trying to come up with a choice that would support the "...not too loud" part, because he's obviously describing how he plays not too loud. 'Soft' was the best I could do. I think "song" works pretty good, though I want to listen with my headphones one more time.

"Icy plunder" - I wonder what that exactly means to him as well, but it's the only familiar colloquialism that would make sense there.

This is my favorite thing to do with 'new' Prince material!

Yeah, it's a great pasttime to dissect new lyrics.
Especially when there's much room to discuss, due to Minnesotan pronounciation.
