Who would be happy if Prince dropped the funk sound.

So this whole retro thing is not sitting too well with me at the moment. In the past i have said many times that people like Prince, Bowie and others in that league earn the right to do what they want when they want. However in Princes fan base he has created an insatiable Frankenstein , simply put we cant get enough of him and because we know that he can really push the envelope we demand more creativity. So here's my issue, as long as P keeps giving props to Larry, Maceo etc and treads the lazy road of funk he will not challenge himself or us. I truly believe that once he drops the NPG retro funk sound he will be a lot better for it. I love TRC and there are some really interesting sounds and ideas on there BUT the funk keeps butting in!!!. I love this whole new jazz direction and wish he would explore it even more. Just drop the Goddam funk. Agree?.

Prince should drop the funk?

After you drop the crackpipe! J/K wink lol

Maaayne, 1+1+1 is 3 and The Everlasting Now are two of the strongest numbers in TRC, thanks to the funk. I say keep it! headbang to the funk

Have you all read The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison? It's not good to lose the funk.

I think prince needs to turn up the guitar. Rock is the way to go. His "recent funk" is weak. Songs like The Work and 1+1+1 are ok, but they are no Days Of Wild or Race.

I'd love an album which took the sound of Chaos, with the originality of TRC. If he wants a retro feel, he should continue to borrow from Zepplin, not James Brown.

A new albums, with tracks in the vein of:

The Everlasting Now
I Like it there
Papa
Loose
Same December
Whole Lotta Love
Chaos & Disorder

etc etc...

Listen to the ONA Paris aftershow. It'll take away your withdrawal symptoms in a flash.

Put the crack pipe down. Funk never dies and you non-dancing rockers can't kill it.

i think i agree.

Prince used to stink of funk. without even trying he'd have people screwing up their face like someone just opened a coffin or something... (think Let Work, G-Spot, Erotic City...etc...etc...etc.) Most importantly it was HIS funk, others used it, borrowed it, but it was HIS.

but now his funk is just a weaker version of someone elses. He's a bit JB, a bit Larry G, a bit of many on old Funker. no bad thing in parts, but it gets tiresome.

what i'm tryin to say... he used to lead and command the funk, now he kind of pay's tribute. IMO

You ARE Sir Nose.

Devoid of FUNK.

You never could swim.

You never will swim.

OMG! Javed, thank for this topic on retro funk hell.

I hate funk. It sounds like a bunch of 70s shit. People talk a lot about funk on this board, and I've always been amazed at how much it's loved. It even won the poll a few months ago.

Listen. the first Prince song that drove me mad was Little Red Corvette. (... well .. I was mad for I wanna be your lover but I was 8 and thought it was a woman singing so that doesn't count.)

Get rid of 'da funk'? Hell yeah! Go Rock!

That's what I wanna hear.

All I got for my rock jones is 1999, Purple Rain, Chaos and Disorder and a few scattered singles.

Now, I've loved Prince's entire catalog from For You to Batman, without hesitation.

I liked it because the sound (R&B-infused rock-plus) could not be categorized and sounded like the blending of cultures.

After he started adding all these funk and rap people to his entourage he sound slowly began to morph (I still cringe during stupid songs on Graffiti Bridge, Diamonds and Pearls and Symbol, even though I like the latter two albums).

Now, I just cringe all the time at this new stuff. I hate most of it (not all.)

I miss the fuckin' Revolution! Like someone said before in another post, I want The Revolution Reloaded!

But, while I want him to go back to rock now, I don't know if he has the lyrics for it. Rock songs can be pretty deep. It's just man and his most furious emotions. That's why I like rock. It's not just about dancing and a good beat, you can scream all your deepest demons out. headbang

P.S. Ya'll know you miss the oww-oo-wah!

I am so serious. See on the surface, rock songs look like throwaway drug-induced creations. But you have to interpret. Seriously.
No.

Oh, I know you're serious. That's why it's funny. biggrin Ya see, by you saying the above quote you're implying that Funk as a genre has no "deep" lyrics, and is only good for "dancing and good beats." And if that's what you REALLY think, no offense, but you don't know the first thing about Funk music, probably aside from Prince's - and that doesn't tell the story of an entire genre.

Most of today's mainstream Rock ain't fit for me to wipe my feet on. Personally, I don't think there are many types of music I've heard that have no merit (maybe none), I dig some of it all. But if you're going to imply that today's Rock music lives up to the standards of vintage Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Chambers Bros., Neil Young, The Clash, The Ramones, David Bowie, Sly & The Family Stone (who played both Funk AND Rock), etc., then you're just fooling yourself.
