dirty mind-made from the heart or commercial reasons? people whAT do you think.
was prince strummin his telecaster and bringing raw sound to dirty mind album because he liked that kind of sound , or because that sound was popular back than. i dont know the answer because he never again played like that.

It was definitely from the heart, because if he was trying to be all commercial he would have given us another album full of "I Wanna be Your Lover"s which is what Warner was expecting.

imo, it was where P was at at that time. Thank god for it, one of my top 5 Prince albums!
it's so odd to me that at this point, Prince was an oddball, new-wave freak...man has he crossed through some styles over the years!

Made not from the heart, but the bollocks.

I read somewhere that the Dirty Mind album was just a bunch of demos Prince made at home and someone convinced him he HAD to release the songs as his next album.

A great album. Really raw sounding unlike anything else in his catalogue. I remember reading that P had doubts about putting it out and Steve Fargnoli talked him round. Can anyone else confirm that?
I think it can be seen as a turning point in his career a one off statement. Kinda 'U think I'm just a soul artist? Check THIS shit out!!' Even looking at the cover of Dirty Mind compared 2 his previous albums must have been a shock at the time. Also I remember reading that there's a longer version of Head in existance that even shocked Prince! Now that I wanna hear!

I can understand asking this question about certain albums, but "Dirty Mind?" No way. That's one of his least commercial albums. It pretty much flopped.

I wouldn't say it flopped exactly. OK it didn't sell millions at the time but it was the album that got him noticed in the 'serious' music papers. People started 2 notice him as an artist not a 'pop star' It was also at this time that Prince toured extensivly Dirty Mind sold an extra 100,000 copies with practically no airplay. It's the album that paved the way 4 the rest of his career. mine!

I agree with you that it is a much better album and got him noticed by critics, etc. But to state that Prince made "Dirty Mind" for commercial reasons when it didn't do all that well comercially isn't accurate, in my opinion.

From the heart?? Doing your sister is very heartfelt you're right. What's makes it raw is that they were pretty much left as demos and not overally produced.

Surely not 4 commercial reasons. With Dirty Mind he stood 2 lose listeners due 2 its adult nature compared 2 the poppyness of Prince. As the sales figures proved. Plus Im sure the cover had something 2 do with it!

It had to be from the heart.. I bet the record label thought he was crazy for producing that after his previous albums.. but somebody had faith in him..
Same goes for Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.. the record label threw it in their face basically when they heard it and said it would never sell.. Now its considered the best album of 2002, and a high standard from musicians standpoint. I think its a bit before its time, like dirty mind is... of course, no'one probably thought that with the release of dirty mind then...

It was made from the libido. For freakish reasons. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
