Aladdin Live DVD reviewed in British magazine

Found this in the british black music monthly, echoes. comes with a big scan of the sleeve but sadly, no pictures.

Prince
Live At The Aladdin Las Vegas
(NPG/Universal)
If you saw the BBC’s recent Liquid Assets documentary on Prince’s fluctuating fortunes, you’ll know that the artist formerly known as the artist now known by his birthname again, spent millions on his lavish must-see 80s tours. Obviously a more discerning spender these days, he clearly spent no more than £9.67 producing this footage of last year’s One Night Alone tour. The direction is awkward with seemingly handheld camerawork, interspersed with sloppy montages of stills, while most disappointingly, the sound is cheap, thin and poorly mixed. All of which would be bearable if Prince wasn’t putting in a bid to show off his newfound glitzy, adult-contemporary maturity, funnily enough in the perfect environment for such endeavours - Las Vegas - but he is, so it’s not. In a set of functional renditions of the old and new, remarkable moments like his take on Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love or new ditty U Want Me are too few and far between. Exactly what it is about his last tour that’s driven the purple one to release not only a 3-CD set but a DVD as well, only he must know. If you’ve seen either the Sign ‘O’ the Times concert film or Lovesexy live videos – it would be nice to think he remembers them - you’ve seen Prince at his most awe-inspiring. That leaves this DVD only for die-hards desperate for something new to watch of their hero. But both they and he deserve better.

That is a remarkable statement! lol But what does it mean? confuse

Forgive me if I'm being stupid but I came out the end of that statement smiling (cos it's funny) and confused (cos I don't know what it means). Are you saying you disagree with the review?

Nothing could possibly be worse than UNCUT's review of this DVD.

Did I say "review"? It was a lazily written tiny snippet tucked away in the nether regions of the magazine and said review isn't even over an inch long.

Basically, UNCUT seems to be cautioning the public against buying the DVD because the performance doesn't even feature familiar moments like 'Purple Rain'.

What is British music journalism coming to?

.

can you post that review if possible? i dont really care about purple rain not being there to be honest, but even though i dont think ONA was princes greatest tour, this dvd didnt really do what he did do on that tour much justice at all.

I will as soon as I'm able.

I'm all for objectivity and constructive criticism.

But I'm definitely all against appalling examples of lazy offhand journalism.

Well, I totally agree with the review - except I wouldn't call U Want Me remarkable.

UNCUT is crap. British music journalism hasn't been worth three shits since 1989.

Yeah but its true, this was easily one of my fave tours yet the DVD bore zero resemblance to what we experienced, especially in Europe and Japan. Now if G would get his ass together and send me my Japan dvd...!

Bullshit. While the picture quality is not great there is nothing wrong with the music or performance. I am begining to believe that the general public just does not know what is good music anymore.

Bullshit back at you.The poor sound quality makes the music redundant IMO.I've 37 music DVD's and Vegas is by far the worst both visually and soundwise.Prince is just a cheap ass.

I'ts such a shame, i loved the tour.

Bullshit back to you MF. If you feel the music is redundant
you need to put the crack pipe away. I don't know if Prince is a cheap ass or if he is just not the Bank of fucking America.

why, becuase the author was correct ???

no because he was just wrong. noone else is doing what prince is doing now. just because hes wearing a suit and not some catsuit riding up his asscheeks people dont like it anymore. jsut cos he now dances like your uncle after a few too many doesnt mean we should overlook the quality on that release. so hes doing some stuff that sounds like jazz fm during the day time when you listen to it in an elevator, at least hes trying to mature gracefully. it doesnt matter that its all clinically-classy and makes you wanna get out the clinking cocktail glasses and eat cheese on little wooden sticks while drinking cheap chablis from tesco that youre passing off as vintage. listen to renato pretend his keyboard is a flute and play a woodwind solo. listen to him pretend the synth is a harmonica. listen to the AOR-remodelling of nikka costa's push and pull. listen to pop life getting all smoothed out and getting rid of that annoying funkiness with brand new solos aplenty. the camera isnt one of those professional ones but who cares - this is giving you that authentic bootleg feel complete with camcorder-mic sound. fans alwyas complain that the bootlegs are best - well here is prince replicating that feel perfectly. and musically? well, this is a masterclass in ageing gracefully.

Finally! Here it is: UNCUT's illuminating assessment in full of Prince Live At The Aladdin Las Vegas, from the November issue.

(3 stars out of 5)

"Recorded at the end of last year, the show includes his versions of Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love' and James Brown's 'Pass The Peas'. But be warned: it is not a greatest hits show, and you won't find 'Purple Rain' et al."

Scary to think that UNCUT is perceived to be one of the UK's leading music magazines, huh?

I cant say I necessarily agree with the review but I agree with their marking out of stars. Why it should be edited and not complete is a dissapointment.

actually i found that review today, it has a bit more at the beginning. they werent that harsh, just saying that if you were hopping for purple rain and the classics, you might not find it. Which is true, if youre looking for a greatest hits medley, you wont find it here.

That leaves this DVD only for die-hards desperate for something new to watch of their hero. But both they and he deserve better.
