Yes,it was released as a single in early 1995,not too long after Prince performed it on the American Music Awards.I can't recall how well it did on the charts.I like it.

It was released in the UK in about March 1995 to coincide with the Gold Tour.

Don't think it did fantastically well, I like it, it's kinda cute, especially the extended version.

Well,he didn't really perform it,they played it and showed a bunch of old video clips and there were a bunch of dancers, including Carmen Elektra.Prince appeared at the end of the medley, and lip-synced three tunes from the then-unreleased 'Gold Experience'..."319","I Hate U" and "Billy Jack Bitch".

btw,on this same show,Madonna and Babyface performed "Take A Bow".I can't believe you missed this show!

the instruments sound cheap though.

That a great show he did for the AMA Purple Med.

Carmen lost her top in that too and they did a freeze frame of the audience to block it out...pitty.

First time I hear I hate u, and Billyjackbitch.

Was blown away by the funky little dance Prince did and the ending with mayte doin her spread for Prince.

Cool, now I will have to watch this again. headbang

Thanks

It was only really created as an 'Intro' for the Gold Tour.
(Prince had used a similar medley idea as the intro to the
Nude tour a few years previous). It was released as a
single as a kind of 'tour souvenir' and a 'goodbye' to all the
'Prince' songs, (at the time he had no intention of playing any
'Prince' tracks ever again).

I heard the Purple Medley live at the start of a Paisley Park performance in September of '95. Everyone went wild when they heard "Batdance" start, but after the quick switch to "When Doves Cry", I knew better. hmm

i like it -- especially the alphabet st. part. I was just listening to it this morning. i think more guitar work would have made it sound not so canned.

Dear o dear Jehovah NO! no no no!
This has got to be the wee man's lowest point!
Like someone said above, it's worse than the 1999 New Master, and THAT'S saying something!

I always felt the version of Purple Rain on the medley was far better than the original. This is what I always hoped would surface on the "Best Of O+>"
.

Anxiety

This single is cheesy - it sounds very Las Vegas lounge act - but it was at least interesting, and the B-Sides medley actually has some funky parts to it. I always thought this was Prince's sideways attempt at squeezing a little bit more promotion out of the Hits/B-Sides set, though I guess there's no real reason he'd give a damn about promoting that WB creation...

Let us not forget that during the Gold Experience era, Prince took over VH-1 for an evening.
It was a mixture concert/story of an obsessed female fan. During the show, his secret admirer was loose in his studio where she came across the Purple Medley video.
It was the extended version with morphed video clips and Prince’s silhouette dancing in front of a backlit screen.
SUPER AWESOME!

This too!!
The edit version of the video was the backdrop at the AMAs during the intro dance sequence of Prince’s performance.

The extended version is cool. It was sort of a summation of the Prince period (78-02). Plus if I'm not mistaken it counted as one more album towards the end of his contract with WB?
