are you serious?! that is my favorite prince moment EVER! he made such a mockery of the interview process. it was a classic prince moment! just the fact that he had his manager reading the questions...and they would stifle laughs at the questions...just classic!
especially the whole "can we be frank?" bit, with the cufflinks...LOFL!!!

although, for some reason i always thought this interview was in 85 but i've never been good with dates.

He was acting very embarrassing. Ya know, the whole 84-86 act when he was hypnotized by the Purple Rain-curse lol saying dumb shit and what not.

But somehow, it was funny in a way even tho its embarrassing as shit.

I think Prince has a quirky sense of humor. Always has. It wasn't embarrassing to me, just hilarious. Cuz he was making mockery of the whole process. I sensed that at any moment he would bust out laughing and say "PSYCHE."

Too many people take him too seriously... way more seriously than he takes himself. I think if one understands that, then a lot of stuff Prince does makes more sense.

it wasn't the reporter...it was prince's manager. he only agreed to the interview if his manager could ask the questions (which were given to him by the journalist). i just loved that this interview made fun of celebrity and made fun of people's view of prince. there's no way people (or, at least people with a half a brain) walked away from watching that interview thinking he was serious about it. it was a complete joke, and that's why its so classic.

of course, this is all my opinion and really counts for only a big pile of shit at the end of the day. thanks for bringing back the memories though!

...just2bnasty, I 100% agree with you!!! I guess u either understand his sense of humor and just what he was trying to do...or u don't. I'd give my left nut to get THAT Prince type of nutty behavior back instead of the sh*t he does these days!

"I'm like everybody else {looong ass pause} I eat and sleep just like eveybody else {another looong ass pause} I don't live in prison {looong ass pause again} and cut to commercial" and round & round, here we go lol

I was laughing my heart off but at the same time I was like "Get the fuck outta here, negro!". Looking at the bright side, I kinda get a kick of it(esp the Jerome part).

He still cuts up. At least he did at the NYC soundcheck at last year's ONA show. The thing about his humor is that it's laced with sarcasm and a lot of people miss it cuz he delivers his lines with such deadpan seriousness in his tone. That along with his voice being deep and him speakin in very deliberate sentences... most people think he's being serious when he's just fuggin with people.

I dunno. I mean by the time he did that interview he had already surpassed most people's threshold for "embarrassment" so it wasn't a big deal to me.

if you look closely during that interview, prince is minutely jiggling his eyes constantly in a very strange way... throught he whole thing.

me and my friends noticed that when it first aired.

Anxiety

I remember when this was originally on MTV in late 1985 - I went *NUTS* over it, and thought his behavior was a riot. It was the first time I'd ever seen him on a television interview - heck, the first real post-Purple Rain interview I'd ever experienced other than the Rolling Stone print interview. I remember thinking he was an absolute FREAK, and I loved him! I don't think it was embarrassing at all - it was just a portrait of a young control-freak rock star trying to manage his persona. It was cute.

Back when it first aired, my friends thought he was on drugs while doing the interview because he talked so slow and his eyes were jiggling. I had to remind them of his anti-drug image.

Now I am not so sure I don't agree with them biggrin

However Prince's humour came across in this interview, I remember thinking that the question about sexism obviously hit home, and for all of the excuses he mustered, the criticism was something he couldn't counter with any convincing justification.

I didn't think it was embarrassing. I just thought...ehh shrug ...actually at the time it was first aired I was happy he was giving a television interview. But, it's not one for the time capsule.

I don't remember every single thing about it, but his idiosyncrasies (personality-wise) seemed to be all over the place, if I remember correctly.

as for my thoughts on the interview, it's certainly one of his more coherent "interviews" (if you can even call it that), I guess this is one of those things where you really have to "get" him.

I've never found this to be embarrassing, there have been much more cringe-worthy moments.
Actually, it's one of his better moments, if you ask me.
