Are U Scared?

Hands up who loves TRC. wave

I love this album, and in many ways feel that Prince delivered what I've always hoped he would. I was absolutely ecstatic as I listened to it the first time through my headphones. It blew me away.

BUT, as much as Prince is incredible, he also possesses a great ability to disappoint, since he covers so many styles of music and likes to constantly change his sound. This means he'll never keep all of his fans happy.

Hearing about "Musicology" is exciting, and I know excitement is what I should be feeling about a new Prince release, but instead, I feel scared. Scared that he will never reach the heights that I believe he touched on TRC.

Basically I guess I'm scared that this new track is going to sound like the god-awful New Power Soul tripe.

Please. shake

Still scared. nod

"Tolerable" - that is a bad sign for a Prince track. Or any track in fact.

I want something so funky it hurts.

U know what he should do. Get John Blackwell and Rhonda in the studio. Get John to play something funky and dirty, and have Rhonda rumble all over it. All the while Prince is doing his chicken scratch like there's no tomorrow.

Some dirty, sweaty funk

Try and understand that Prince is a type of fisherman, and he is trying to catch as many fish as possible. Bear with him. Yes, I do get scared. Like your title, btw.

DMSR could have been a great funk song. I say "could" because it has some great arrangements. But all these synths and his ... Linn (yak!) ... kill the funk.
The way he played it in The Hague in '88... now THAT was some funky shit!

To answer the question of this thread: I aint scared. TRC is his funkiest (released) work so far, and it sounds REAL! no overproduction, great rhythm guitar, killer drums, the warmth of the rhodes and a nice, thick live feel to it. If Prince had recorded Emancipation or Rave with the same technique, they could have been great as well.

In the 90s, it wasnt the songwriting that was bad. It was the recording.

Drop the bar? For me, TRC and Sign would be a tough one to call, though mainly because TRC is newer and more suited to my current musical taste, but I would definitely rate TRC higher than Lovesexy, and I like that album a lot.

I think TRC is one of the only things he's done in the last 10 or 15 years that is a great piece of work from start to finish (barring wedding feast, and even that is quite amusing if u're feeling famish).

The 90s saw some good music, and the early 00s has seen some too, but nothing I really felt proud to take to a friend's house and say "check out this funky shit!"

Except for TRC, which is funkier than a bow-legged monkey.

Hmmm.. I dont know. I wouldnt mess with that one. SOTT is the one album which sound I`d consider the least dated.

Are you serious? The least? I love that album too, but Dorothy Parker needs a makeover and Housequake isn't hittin' anymore.
