I think horns arent always appropriate, but they 'beef' up the sound a lot, giving it a fuller and thicker arrangement. Synths often sound weedy. My opinon is that some of his work is missing horns (the Prince album is crying out for them). I dont really think he overuses them now.
For instance on the last tour, he left horns off When U were mine and just kept the original synth (not in all the shows I know), whereas in 1988, he performed this with horns and it sounded great. Horns add that funk / jazz element that prince is trying to acheive, whereas synths give his songs a more 'new wave' vibe that was cool in the early eighties. Now though I think it sounds dated, horns have a timeless quality. | |
