why NEWS is more interesting now than all the old stuff. Expect a lot of ppl starting complaining now that the old songs are better but I say: listen ppl, or listen twice, and forget all this emotional bullshit of the past like dolphin or hate u or take me with u etc etc this new music is so much more interesting you can't imagine I am sure he will be famous in 2090 for all the stuff he is playing and composing now and in the 5 or 10 years to come Shall we make a bet? He finally found out how to record in a way it sounds natural and life - instead of constructed and un-connected. He knows. Baby knows. You know!

Many people argue (with less emotion, more reasoning and at least some specific examples) that Prince's earlier work was very interesting, recorded with a natural feel to it, and with recordings 'connected' by themes which ran through albums and across his work. But you haven't provided a single convincing argument to suggest that Prince's work is any more or less interesting than it was 20 year's ago.
And who knows what people will be listening to in 2090? You don't know, Prince doesn't know, and nor do I. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

winterman said: this new music is so much more interesting you can't imagine I am sure he will be famous in 2090 for all the stuff he is playing and composing now and in the 5 or 10 years to come no, he won't. He'll be praised and recgonized for "1999" & "purple rain" as he has, and always will be. He finally found out how to record in a way it sounds natural and life - instead of constructed and un-connected.
umm...to me, "dirty mind" is a "natural" as it gets. "If I was your girlfriend" is in no way "un-connected". And all of his music is "constructed" (whatever the hell that means.) NEWS, to me, sounds like a basic instrumental jazz/fushion album. I don't think it's interesting at all, ESPECIALLY comparing it to the likes of "parade", SOTT, ATWIAD, "purple rain", "dirty mind", or "lovesexy". I do feel that the rainbow children is the last good, well-balanced album he's made in YEARS, but I, in no way, see it as more interesting than his past work. like I said be before, I respect your opnion, but we couldn't differ more. ~KiKi

Opinions on NEWS are as opposite as the two poles that the name and packaging represent.
You can't make someone like fringe music, that's what repetition-radio is for. People will dig it-or not, on their own. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I want to say something.
I was watching the live DVD the other day and it struck me that at least half of the fans are middle-aged, reserved individuals that would appear to be completely different to myself. I mean the ones that stand there and barely move and look generally uncomfortable. In many ways the audience shots are quite embarassing because the crowds are always so unanimated and, basically, old. I understand that everybody has their own taste in music but I would consider myself, at 22, and with a good group of friends who all have, I would consider, a similarly decent knowledge of good music, to be in the prime of my ability to determine quality- the real chicken grease if u will. Older people have experience and knowledge, but at some point they invariably lose the ability to keep up with change. Their affection for the music of their era, ie. the 80s Prince albums, leads them to stop moving forward and learning more about newer music, newer styles etc. This is, rather necessarily, a generalisation. But, I honestly believe some fans just don't have their finger on the pulse anymore. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course. I love great music like Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and for me TRC and NEWS is far closer to this funky, tightly-played stuff than anything like High will ever be. I'm confident in stating that such music is crap. I don't feel in the least arrogant if I say that someone who thinks the High album is good clearly doesn't know good music. The 80s stuff which has been talked about here, like Dirty Mind, is great. But so is TRC and so is NEWS. Which is better, I wouldn't like to say. Are there people here that will say they think "Headhunters" is rubbish? Are there people that will say "Music Of My Mind", "Talking Book", "There's A Riot Goin' On" or "Belle" are bad albums? If we agree that such music is great then surely TRC is the amazing album I think it is. For me TRC is in some ways the album I've been waiting for and wanting Prince to make for ages. I think there are several young-ish orgers who would say the same kind of thing. All young and into music, and people who know what the good shit is. I cannot fathom the opinions of some Prince fans when it comes to TRC in particular. That is obviously not anyone's problem other than my own, but I just can't empathise with it. God I'm rambling. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm young and I'm cool, ok? I know what's good and maybe nobody else in the world does, except for all my friends that play instruments and smoke weed too and are really cool for doing so.

Fauxnewbie's arguement throws up numerous interesting points, the most prominent of those being the question of what 'old' and 'new' fans expect from Prince.
For me, The Rainbow Children was a confirmation of greatness following three disappointing - but certainly not worthless - works following Emancipation (not including The Truth). As an unblinkered music obsessive (over 2000 records and counting) who is proficient on several instruments and also a music journalist for a group of newspapers in Scotland, I like to think I know what I'm talking about when it comes to the big picture. I've been a supporter of Prince since Come and think TRC is quite easily his strongest release since The Gold Experience. Of course, it's all a matter of taste and opinion but it seems increasingly obvious to me that if you were there for Prince's commercial and critical glory years (81-88) your expectations for his new work will be completely different than my own. I listened to these albums with the benefit of hindsight and as much as I admire and respect the lofty position they have acquired on God's musical mantlepiece, I prefer the sound and vibrancy behind TRC compared to, say, Controversy. The message has certainly changed, but this guy's passion and talent (which borders on genius - a term so overused that it makes me sick to read it) has not dimmed by one single molecule over the past 25 years. It seems to me he is forever crippled by an urge to communicate and share personal revelations, gratuitiously displaying a unique sensitivity to this reality - causing him to be deeply-scarred and soul-bruised - which the actions of his ego continually contradict. I'm here for the whole journey and don't care if he runs out of fuel every now and again - he always manages to fill the tank to the top again. To each his own,but I can't believe that any fan would think that NEWS is better than anything Prince released in his career. You must be Prince. I think it is the worst thing that Prince has ever released in his career. I didn't even buy it. This cd is way below his capacity to make music.
